At 47 with disc issues I now have gone to a true 3-4 second lowering and about 2-3 to reverse it. Weights have dropped right down but I have been experiencing consistent DOMS in the target muscle. Like Lats said one of the hardest parts going to true muscular failure is the mind telling me I’m done as everything is burning.I was doing higher reps for a long time following dantes advice however the slower cadence has me failing often now around 9-10 reps but joints so far feel ok
From day one I instinctively did 3-4 second eccentrics. It might even be longer on some exercises. I was 16 and knew nothing about time under tension or mind-muscle connection. It was simply a safety issue. I thought if I dropped the weight too fast I would tear a muscle. As time went on, I learned of the two aforementioned principles and also enjoyed being in control of the weight with that cadence. It wasn't until I started watching videos and going to a commercial gym that I realized the majority of people do reps as fast as possible. I think it's because their pain tolerance is low and they just want to get the set over with. I've never had a major injury that completely kept me out of the gym.
