I have recently added deadlifts in to my routine. I've been liftng a long time and have built a good strong body, but deadlifts have always eluded me(or the other way around).

I am friends with one of the trainers in the gym and he has been coaching me here and there on deadlift form.
But what I don't understand is how to train for deadlift.

Do you do them one at a time? Sets of three? Fast or slow?

Right now I am doing them in sets of three slowly. About five sets. Med weight. Then I just do abs.

Any help would be appreciated!

first are you a PL or a BB?
that will determine how you use them in a training program

i use them in a BB prog. i do conventional deads off the floor with overhand grip. i do them with back either at beginning of workout or at the end. if i start with them i do 135x15,225x10-12,315x8-10 405x6 for 2-3 sets. at the end i warm up 135,225 then 315 for 1-2 sets

I'm a BB. So when you say 135x15, you mean 15 reps in a row?

DAMN!!:D

i never go up to that many reps for deads. 15 reps with a light weight like that wouldnt do much i dont think(for me). ive been doing rack deads lately but when i did them from the floor my rep scheme looked like this:
135/8
225/5
315/5
405/3
2 sets of 495/6

i dont like to waste my energy with doing lots of warmups

Deadlifts For Mass

Deadlifts off the floor or in a rack are great for overall mass. I too dont like them for high reps, go heavy on the deads then goto BB rows or T-Bar rows for the high reps.

Form is super important on Deads and squats, they do wonders for my back when i get them right but ouch when im lazy.

Been using bands and 225 for 6 to 8 singles followed by Good Mornings, that along with some other lower back lifts help your "core" and will make you stronger overall. J.R.

I never do more than 6-8 reps for dead
gives me AMAZING results for back thickness development

do it and then go to pull up and u'll feel how this shit pump ur muscles lol

I do partial deadlift now, used to be able to do 675 for 1 in full deadlift version for 225lbs in cutting :D

if u train for BBing then I do

1x15 to warm up
1x10 to warm up
2x8
2x6

and that's it and u switch to anotha exercise ...

just my 02

THIS IS NOT WHAT I DO TO INCREASE MY STRENGTH THOUGH

Deads are one of greatest movements for sure size and strength! I've always stress to the newbee to start off with lights weight and high reps. This ensures and enstills proper form, thus preventing injury. Light weight is a weight that can be moved at around 20-30 reps, at that point you'd add more weight while lowering the reps. Ex. 125lbs for 30reps, will now goto 175lbs for 20 reps and so on. I've worked up to what I think is a respectable weight, but I'm always shooting higher!!
I've been doing a lot of Rack Deads set below the knees.
My last workout looked like this:
225x20
275x20
315x15
405*12
585*8
635x6

ASONE...
