I'm thinking about getting back on the Mountain Bike for my cardio

Just a thought ya know? I used to be huge into mountain bikes about 12-15 yrs ago, I even used to do Cross Country races. It was a lot of fun, but I got away from it all because I liked bodybuilding, and I was burning too many calories cycling to put on size. Anyways, now it would be more of a recreational type thing for my cardio ya know? Maybe jump on the bike and go hit the trails for an hour or two 2x/wk. I think it'd be a blast to get out there again,as I have not even ridden a bike in about 10 yrs. I still have an old one, but the guy at the bike store told me that I'd spend so much money fixing it and tuning it up I'd be just better off getting a new one. I dont know, I dont really want to spend anymore than about $400-$500 right now on one, I'm going to go look today. Maybe this will help my legs? My legs are big right now, but they dont like to separate too good until last minute before a show. Any of you guys ride? How do you find it works with bodybuilding?

I actually love taking the mountain or road bike out with the wife if the weather permits. I just use it as my hour of cardio if I do so. I just do not it every day, but 2Xweek for an hour or so. The weather is getting awesome outside, so I want to take advantage of my cardio outside the gym a couple days a week. I do not see it hindering your goals if you are eating enough of the right macro's/calories. Cardio is meant to elevate your heart rate for a period a time...I think at the highest I get my heart rate at is 140.

check out ibexbikes.com. you buy it direct from the manufacturer and get alot more bike for your $. i was hesitant to order sight unseen but the guys there are great with helping you decide what size, and returning is not a prob.

if you can get full suspension, do it. as a bigger guy it sure makes it alot less punishing. but dont buy a full susp for less than a grand, if you have to stay at that budget go hardtail for sure.

dude, im an obsessive researcher and have just finished going through a mtn bike phase, so if you have any questions just ask.

$1000 is about $6-$700 too much for me, LOL. I'm just looking for something to pedal and get me outside. I went and just looked at a Cannondale H2(I think) it was about $400, seemed really nice. And then there was this Specialized model, it was red and black, a little more beefy and heavy than the other bikes but screw it, thats sort of what I want right now. I'm probably going to just try and find one used for a couple hundred bucks, for what I'm going to be doing with it I cant see spending more than that. If I get more into it, then maybe down the road ya know? Thanks for the info though!!

bro, bro, bro, you've made the right choice. Let me take the guesswork out of your next MTB purchase for you and tell you what I did (that's worked out perfectly). I have a 29er (a Redline [you probably remember the company from way back when]) that's completely rigid (no shocks, but you don't need 'em) and has a 1x9 gear setup (1 chainring in the front, 9 speed cassette in the back). I ride this thing ALL over town and do some nice singletrack on it, too. Check out redline.com for their lineup. Head over to www.mtbr.com and check out **broken link removed** for a review, too.

Mountain Bike

If you want to maximize your cardio you want a very NON -technical course. So any bike will due. Check out ebay. Or wal mart. If you just want exercise, a cheap, heavy bike will do you fine. Heavy is actually better.

do not buy a bike from walmart, all the fun will be sucked right out of it. yes, i guess in theory a heavy ass bike would be more of a workout but it will not be fun at all, not to mention the derailers and brakes suck ass. you can get hurt mtn biking and that def wont help ur training. you want something quality that you know wont fall apart.

that redline SacToSD posted is def ur best bet in your budget. might get one of those myself, but i love my full susp.

edit: that redline is a bit out of ur $ range bro. nice bike though. at ibex bikes u can get the alpine 550 for 600$. i know thats out of ur range as well but i can assure you that if you start riding consistently you will want to upgrade if you just buy the cheapest one at the bike shop.
