i had a slight injury to my chest happen when doing close grip bench. did not seem like anything major at all. so a few days later it was chest day and i was a little worried. i started warming uo slowly, like 3 or 4 sets with the bar only ( we use the smith on flat bench). felt ok.
so i go to 135/15 reps, felt good but i felt a little tingle in my shoulder and neck. 225-10, when i stood up my chest felt fine but the shoulder and neck was more noticeable. 275 on the third rep i felt something give in my left pec. iracked the weight and stood up and when i did the pain in my neck all the way up to right behind my left ear was un bearable.

after a trip to the emergency room and an ortopediac, the good news is there is no tear. the best explanation i could get for the pain in my shoulder neck, and my not being able to really move my left arm was that i over compensated for my sore chest with my shoulder and strained a nerve. anyone ever here or do this? i have taken a week off and can still barely lift my 6 mo. old son. although there is some improvement, it is slow. any suggestions please? i really need to be back in the gym. by the way i am 35, and my shoulders are always kinda brittle anyway. thanks. oh yeah, my trap was really swollen too. the doctor freaked out when he saw it.

Get someone to have a good look at your AC joint. it is quite possible you have separated it and the ac is now causing impingment of the nerve. Thats separated your AC joint not your shoulder. Get off the smith machine and opt for d/bell chest work. This will allow your shoulders to move in a more natural range of motion. As for close grip work use a free bar for the same reason as for chest. It allows your shoulders to move more freely. Good luck!
