Hey guys, anyone use lentils in their nutritional program?

1 cup contains:
230 calories
40 grams carbs
18 grams protein
1 gram fat

I've started useing them as a carb source, I know they have a very low glycemic index.

Question: would you use with brown rice to make them a complete protein?

Seems like the perfect carb source.

Very good idea :)

I myself eat a lot of lentils or beans and always mix them with a cereal source to make a complete protein. It can be rice indeed, but I usually use oats or whole wheat pastas (personal preference).

LENTILS are lacking aminos methionine and cystine if memory serves me right and i think brown rice has them, would have to go get a book to check but i am fairly sure, brown rice lacks I think Lysine and threonine could be wrong however. So in answer I think they would form a complete protein together.

I eat lentils sometimes, but not really often, I add then to tomato soup which I make from scratch for bulking it up.

best wishes

YES

Lentils and rice are a complete protein.
Have a look at Quinoa as well.

One of the most important values of lentils you didnt mentioned,ia not the protein, but could be the fiber, all legumes are really high in fiber, and bodybuilders have to take pills to get enough of fiber from their diet since sometimes is more protein, fiber prevent many problems like colum cancer and may prevent high cholesterol since the fiber absorve some clogs in the blood,if we all add beans to the brown rice then we all make a perfect meal.

Lentil soup on a bed of rice, very tasty and very nutritious!! Add in the extra virgin Olive oil and this stuff rocks!!!

great point! 1 cup = 16 grams of fiber.

good info, thanks

Like the idea of Lentil in tomato soup, two of my favorites, never thought of them together.

Also OldFella, I drizzle both the Olive Oil and a little Balsamic on them.

I myself am Armenian and this is a staple of one of our foods that you will see in a typical "medditerranean diet" Lentils rock and is a fiber all star as the link below indicates.

We typically eat it with brown rice with lentils on top (like old fella said) and or in a salad with with balsamic vingegar and oilive oil (mix it up with some red onions and chopped asspargus) good stuff man.

I love black beans.

I always cook a big pot every week and its much better and tastier than the canned stuff. They go with just about anything and a bag costs .99 which makes a large pot full

TOMATO AND RED LENTIL SOUP

TOMATO AND RED LENTIL SOUP

1 large onion chopped
2 carrots chopped
3 celery sticks chopped
400 grams of tomatos from a can chopped
or 600/800 grams of whole tomatoes cut out green bits
200 grams of red lentils
2 litres of vegtable stock
2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
2/3 tablespoon of tomato puree

salt and pepper ? if you need it
and maybe juice of half a lemon for added tang

throw it all in a pot bring to the boil and simmer for 30-40mins on lower heat.

then blend all the ingredients either with a hand blender in the pot or carfully in an upright blender.

and serve,

Sometimes I use boiled chicken and dice it and add to give it a little more protein, but I always add before serving in the bowl not to the soup mix. If you like your soups on the sweeter side just add more carrots

This recipe does produce a shit load of soup for feeding a family, so just half the measures for less (obviously:p )

enjoy

Alin, you don't know what you are missing brother!! These are very tasty........just find an original lentil soup recipe and enjoy!!! Just put a tbls or more of ev olive oil on top after you plate it up!!

Cool info...

i used lentils a lot in the recent past but only used them alone. i like the idea of combining them with rice or beans. once i'm done with my cutting program i think i'll be doing that for sure as a staple of my carb source for 1-2 meals a day. Lentils and Barley would be good too and it would keep it a low gi.
