ok, a friend of mine who recently started lifting again, looking to compete again, started back up in the gym like a week ago.

i asked him how long has it been and he said at least 1.5 years since hes touched a weight. he understood that he had to start slow, but apparently, even going very light he over did it

he was admitted into the hospital on friday and was released today. they gave him 7 bags of IV's and said his creatine levels were so high that it caused the kidneys to shut down? he said he wasnt quit sure about everything but they said it was due to working out so hard.

friday he went in because he said his pee looked like diet coke, and he was very very sore from working out, but to be in the hospital he didnt think so, but he went in anyways becuase of his colored pee

now have you guys ever heard of anything like this before? working out so hard your kidneys shut down and creatine levels are so high its dangerous?

could this happen if you dont drink enough water while you work out too? i dont drink a lot of water when i work out so i am going to start if this can happen!

let me get your opinions on this

was it creatine levels or creatinine level? more likely creatinine, creatinine is the by product of the breakdown of creatine.. and it's excreted through the kidneys.. was he taking exogenous creatine.. I've heard anecdotal stories of exogenous creatine causing this type of problem. But have never heard of it being caused by working out too hard. I've had elevated creatinine levels before due to working out to soon to a blood panel but never to the point of causing kidney failure.

Yes working out will cause the breakdown of muscle tissue, it's a natural process and creatine will be released in the process along with the byproduct of creatinine. But I've never heard of it causing kidney failure in a healthy person.. Does he have any underlying medical conditions?

Edit: I just did a quick search and there's a conditions called rhabdomyolysis, which is the breakdown of muscle tissue. Apparently high levels of exertion can cause this, but then again is your friend healthy or have any conditions.. is he on statin drugs as this is one of there major side effects..BTW I'm not a medical professional just giving some basic info that anyone can find on there own.

His creatinine levels are high because of kidney insufficiency, not over training.Tell him to get a creatinine clearance test ASAP.

I strongly recommend drinking a lot of water all the time, training or not. You need to be properly hydrated all the time. it will also help your kidneys work more effieciently.

Clinically, creatine kinase is assayed in blood tests as a marker of myocardial infarction (heart attack), rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown) and in acute renal failure.

The creatine in his blood panels may have well been both exogenous and endogenous.

I was thinking he may have over done it on his first day back. There are a number of factors that may have contributed to the outcome. Dehydration, creatine loading, electrolyte levels...etc. Depending on his activity levels in the time he was not "working out", he may have very well just over done it.

Elevation of CK is an indication of damage to muscle. It is therefore indicative of injury, rhabdomyolysis, myocardial infarction, muscular dystrophy, myositis, myocarditis, malignant hyperthermia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. It is also seen in McLeod syndrome and hypothyroidism. The use of statin medications, which are commonly used to decrease serum cholesterol levels, may be associated with elevation of the CPK level in about 1% of the patients taking these medications, and with actual muscle damage in a much smaller proportion.

As ghost asked, is your friend on any statin med's(lipitor, crestor)? BTW I'm not a medical professional just giving some basic info that anyone can find on there own.

sounds like he has a kidney issue to me.
Actually that is unlikely. CPK issues are neuromucular or metabolic. I have a neuromuscular disease which causes the muscles, specifically connective tissues in the muscle, to breakdown uncontrollably due to an unknown enzyme deficiency. Because of the enzyme deficiency, CPK (creatine phosphate kinase) enzyme uncontrollably flood into the blood stream. They then reach the kidneys in large quantities. I've personally have had CPK levels as high as 54000! The kidney can not process the toxic CPK levels and shutdown. This is exhibited as brown, or coca cola colored, urine. It can lead to muscle wasting as in my case, which I have come back from in the past year. Make no mistake this is a VERY serious issue. One could easily wind up on dialysis for the rest of their life because of this.
This disease tends to manifest in men when they reach their mid 20s and mid 30s. Unfortunately, medicine knows very little about the disease and they can not scientifically nail it down yet. University of Pennsylvania Neurology department has been using me as a guinea pig for the last 3 years. Through trial and error, I have discover the affected muscle group is my legs. I've learned to control the CPK levels through diet and exercise intensity adjustment.

i have not talked to him since he was in the hospital this past weekend. he was released on monday and is just resting i hear

i am still thinking about this. i have gotten many answers but i am not sure what to believe. once i talk to him, i will ask him for his medical papers to see what the doc said.

but to put it in laymens' terms, he said his doc said he worked out too hard too soon. the extreme muscle breakdown was too much for his body.

Not surprised. Doctors tend to just right a diagnosis of acute rhabdomyolysis and wash there hands of it. It took months for me to get a doctor to really investigate the issue.
Tell you friend I wish him good luck with everything!
