There's a very limited number of story archetypes - that's why Hollywood has gone so hard on remake over the last 10 years. They're out of ideas and the alleged 'creative geniuses' out there can't come up with anything new, including a new archetype.

I'll say it - I liked it. Was I expecting to win any awards? Absolutely not. Was I very entertained? Hell ya!

Part of it is the Pitch process where they are trying to sell the storyline as a variation on an already "proven product".

It is also laziness and fear of being canceled. For example there are plenty of fascinating folk legends in Africa regarding underwater worlds and creatures. Disney could have used these as a base for an original diverse product. Of course if a non native person ad adapted this material they would be canceled for cultural appropriation. Instead they just took a Danish story and race swapped it. So then we get a "groundbreaking " little mermaid which offers nothing original.

Another factor with storylines is that they believe the audience has no attention span and can only process what is already familiar.

It was stupid! What an insult to the original. Bad everything, bad acting, fake fight scenes, bad,bad,bad.
