Online vs. Local trainer

Hi, I'm looking for someone to help me with my diet/routine.

I keep seeing some of the name being thrown here, which I assume are "online" personal trainer. Have anyone have experience with these fine folks? (I mean actually gone through their training routine, not just comments on board).

As for local trainers, how do I find one that does similar transformational work. I wouldn't trust any trainer at my gym let alone train me. I do see few independent trainers in couple of towns (they all seem to have a small gym where you do 1/1 training)

Any plus/minus for online vs local?

Thanks for your input. Cheers.

I recently hired Phil Hernon. His work out is brutal and he gives great advice on diet, routines, etc. He is also very personable and responds pretty quickly to emails.

Of course a "live" personal trainer is great, but I am currently deployed so that is not an option. My second choice is a former Mr. USA to get advice and help from. If you ask me, for the price, you just can't beat it. Drop him a PM and see if he can take you on. You won't be sorry, though your muscles may be a little pissed at you for the first week or so...

I worked w/ Shelby (online). There are some good ones on this board man. Shelby, Phil, Alex... Go to the pictures section, you'll see a bunch of their work.

Tell you what. You should hire Phil Hernon. He is awsome. I started training with him and got my results within 5 months well i got what i wanted to acomplish. Now to me 250 bucks i spend on a weeknd fucking around with my 4 children. It was the best investment i have ever made towards trainning. The good thing about it is that if you have common sense u get results quick. I hardly bother him anymore because he cleared up everything in the begining and now the rest is to follow.Am bulking a little now trying to get to 200lb fairly lean and will try to compete in the 40+ category. Everyone at the gym is pushing me to do it.I already learned how to get ripped fast and thats what i needed him for so i learned that and some.He tought me how to grow lean and that is hard shit to do but if you put commitment and dedication you can achieve what you want. Go for it and you will see. 250 bucks you spend in one shot at the supplements store on shit you dont fuken need my bro. Peace out.

Thanks for your comments. I'm leaning toward one of the trainers that you guys mentioned.

One thing I would like to know - what does online or remote training entails? Do they just give you a training routine and a diet plan or is it something more. Sorry for not understanding - its hard to imagine how remote training works.

Thanks again.

I am not knocking any of the guys that do personal training on this board as I have never used them. I will say this though, having someone there to spot you and push you as well as see face to face I think is of great value. This is something that lacks with an online trainer. I am currently working with an IFBB pro at my gym and having him there to train me is much better than me doing it myself. Why? Because I don't care how hardcore you are, you will do more with someone there pushing you and helping you force reps....if you have a good training partner, emphasis on good, then an online trainer may not be a bad idea.

For some it might be just a personal choice. I prefer to take advice regarding training, diet, aas, cardio etc from someone who has been there than from some young punk who just got personal training certification just in it to make a buck. If you're still fairly new you would probably be better off with a personal trainer by your side showing you proper form (although most of them dont know what that is), but if you have form down and been training for a while youd be better off with one of the guys mentioned above. Im glad I hired Alex I will probably sign up for another 6 months, and if I had to recommend anyone else it'd be Shelby.

Hope this helps..

I would love to find someone local like that - problem is, I don't trust anyone in my gym (I belong to 2, local one and another one with LA in the name). In fact, I think what they are having people do is quite dangerous. Some of these guys are fatter than I am or look like they just came out of high school, not really motivating.

I'll continue to look a for local trainer but in the mean time, some of these online trainers seems to do a good, if not phenomenal job. Thanks for all the comments. cheers!

PS, is there a list somewhere that have IFBB pro's that do personal training - by area/region?

Not sure about a list...but I am sure a golds gym around you should have an IFBB pro as a trainer. But you have to trust the person you are working with.

You can always send the guys here a PM or email. I'm sure they could answer your questions.

Phew, Gold's gym - haven't seen one of those around. Closest one is 18 miles on other side of city and $8 toll.

I will - I'm deciding between Phil and Shelby (and for no reason other than they are mentioned a lot on other threads). Since I don't know either one, I'm perusing their website to get a better feel. Thanks

I think I'm going with Phil.

I went with Shelby. I'll be starting in December.

I hired Shelby about 10 weeks ago and couldnt be happier. He designed my diet and supplement routine and i send him pictures and stats every monday. Right now i am at the lowest weight and bf i have been at in 12 years and i am still rolling.

There are some really good trainers on here so dont be afraid to drop all of them a pm or email and chat with them about their programs. Also dont be afraid of hiring a trainer online. It was the best decision i have made. KS

Also i would like to add, i am in a big city and i wouldnt hire one of the local trainers for nothing. Most of them have a piece of paper from a college saying they are a PERSONAL TRAINER and they know everything there is to know about bodybuilding. Now im sure there are some that are very knowledgeable but shelby, phil, alex, mountaindog, mainevent etc have REAL LIFE KNOWLEDGE and EXPERIENCE. JM2C....KS

Hey thats great OJS, is that you in the picture?

Yeah that is OJS in the pic and he is a good trainer and all around knowledgable guy. I saw pics of some of his clients.

And dude. If you have a pro in your gym then hire them. If not then I would go with one of the more knowledgable guys from this board. You already know their names. I am a personal trainer and I know dozens of other trainers and and maybe less than five guys out of a hundred actually know what they are talking about and practice what they preach. When it comes time for me to prep in about a year I am going to hire Shelby.

It is. But it's about two years old. Should I put up a current one? Yeah, I think I will. OK, I feel better now!!!
