Overeating

You always hear you have to eat big to get big, I don't agree with that. I know about quite a few golden age bodybuilders who didn't eat much at all. And several didn't eat many if any carbs, just mainly protein. They got big and they only used the gear that was available back then. Your body can only process so much food at a time and if you overeat all you do is get fat and a bloated stomach. That bloated stomach look isn't just due to GH. Bill Pearl says you can grow on very little protein, I think he said something like 90 grams a day. People say stuff like "I gained 25 pounds on this cycle" but how much of that is fat? Maybe 15 pounds? Then they have to worry about dieting. I've been on a low calorie and low carb diet while on cycle and I'm gaining lean muscle, sure I'm not gaining 5 pounds a week but it's all muscle and no fat. What is your opinion about this?

I think it depends on the person.

Some people can grow on 2500-3000 cals a day, others need up to 5000 cals a day.

But I think that people use gear as a reason to overeat and gain fat.

But then again look at Lee Priest, seems like its been working for him! haha :D

Depends on how fast you wanna get big!You can eat lean and take forever getting there or eat big and get big faster. Now I'm not saying going out and eating mickie d's ed,but you can grow huge on eggs,potatoes,rice,steak,etc...JMO

I think the bottom line is that unless there is a degree of surplus in calories, you are going to have difficulting attaining any appreciable mass gains. After all, our body prefers NOT to have a large muscle mass, as from an evolutionary point it is very inefficient.

I never usually never get more than 200g a day of protein, but from what I understand,, the more good carbs you take in the less protein is necessary for recovery.. But for sure it depends on the person..

protein vs carbs

only amino acids can be synthesized and turned into muscle. while carbs are protein sparing. so, it depends on what ratio's of protein to carbs your diet consists. if you eat ALOT of protein then research would suggest carbs are less important for gaining muscle. however, if you eat less protein, then you would want to eat more carbs to spare the protein in your diet for muscle building only and NOT for energy.
personally, i eat 1-1.5 gms of protein per lbs of bodyweight and cycle carbs. on the low carb day i will eat up to 2 grams of protein, while on a higher carb day i will usually only eat about 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight.
i am sure many of you already know this, but just throwing it out there.

Eating more than your body can utiliyze will certainly cause you to gain fat, nothing groundbreaking there. The trick is figuring out just the right amount that you need. I used to do the whole bulking thing and take in 6500 cals, following Gavin Kaine's protocol found here in the articles section. All I did was end up picking up a boat load of bodyfat. I was eating clean too, which is hard to do when taking in that much. My stomach was always bloated and I felt like I was force feeding myself.
Now I am following Phil's adivce and am actually stonger now at a bodyweight that is 25 pounds less. I am now taking in just 4k cals/day.This is the way to go. I am still able to gain muscle mass by slowing upping the cals when I hit a plateau.

IT"S ALL ABOUT YOUR METABOLISM !

it took me years of gaining/losing to figure out how much calories/carbs/protien I need. Everyone's metabolism is different , mine is very fast so I HAVE to eat a lot of protien and calories to gain anything, but if my carbs and/or calories are too high then I get fat. You have to get to know your own metabolism, THAT is what determines your needs.

this is pretty much what I mean, your individual metabolism.

Tons of GREAT responses in this thread, to a very good question...

Ultimately, it does depend on one's individual metabolism and biophysiology. HOWEVER, *OVEREATING* does exist, but most importantly, "FAULTY-EATING" is the major cause of FAT GAIN while bulking...

You can eat 5,000 cals + of lean protein and low glycemic carbs such as Tuna, Chicken, Sirloin, Egg whites, brown rice, yams, oatmeal, or you can eat 5,000 cals + of Fried chicken, burgers, T-Bones, pasta, cereal, and sugars.
The types of gains you will make, both qualitatively and quantitatively, will depend moreso on your MACRONUTRIENT breakdown, and less on total calorie intake.

Over eating is a big problem today in recreational guys trying to get big.
If however you put the time in and learn the foods and diets and your body you can eat a tremendous amount of food and not get fat. I have never known anyone to get FAT on 4-600 grams of lean protein a day, complex carbs and EFA's, it's when the guys are eating shit foods they get fat and ignoring the rules of offseason anabolic cardio.

Overeating can cause that distended stomach look no doubt about it.

As I've learned all too well, a calorie is a calorie no matter how clean it might be. In the quest to get big, I once ate as often as 9X a day including two middle of the night protein shakes. But in the end while I felt big and powerful, I was simply fat. High blood pressure ensued too. Now I am 50 lbs lighter, maintain visible year round abs and get far more compliments from John Q public about my physique!

constant overeating will stretch your stomach and you will look like you have a big stomach even with low body fat

Agreed most bbers have large stomaches from eating and always have food in them so will look pregnant when low bf but 2-3 day dieting cures this issue
