In a Q&A session on Proelite.com, MMA fighter Phil Baroni just stated that he doesn't squat heavy anymore, instead doing sets of 20 reps with 404 pounds.

A lot of you probably know him already, but for those who don't, he fights at 185 pounds, is around 200 in between fights, and is built like a bodybuilder.

Still, this sounds a bit off to me. I remember Platz being able to do 22 reps with 500 pounds, and he was a lot bigger than Baroni.

I don't know.. Baroni is a really strong guy. He's been training for years, and used to be a competitive bodybuilder before fighting. Seems a little far fetched hes doing 20 reps with 405.

idk i havent seen this guy. but theres a lady at my gym that squats 405 for 10-15 easy. and shees only like 160-170

Sounds about right. When I was around 200 I could do 6 plates on each side as a max and with 4 plates for around 20. I'm sure he is resting for the last 5 reps in between each rep for a good 5-10 secs then going down and coming up. You never rack though. Thats how how you do 20 rep squats. Find a weight you can handle for 10 and then slowly bang out the other 10, but never rack.

Id like to see some mma fighters here on this board. Anybody know any to invite. They have a tough training regimen.

he is all muscles and seem very nervous, I think it's 100% true

Don't know him, never seen him, but I seen guys squatting 4 plates and barely bending their knees, they probably wouldn't even squat 2 plates.

have you seen that guy?! He's got a squatters build and he's built like a spartan ... obviously geared up ... why couldn't he?

Depends on how deep hes squatting. There are a lot of guys who say they can do 405 for 10-20 but when you actually see it, its barely a quarter squat. Platz when all the way down on his squats.

Seen Phil at the gym cutting weight in the sauna.... He is fighting a local fighter here in hawaii tomorrow for the "Icon" belt... Should be a good standup match...

There was a guy at the gym last week trying to explain to another guy how to do a squat. He did a quarter squat and told him that's as low as he should go. Another guy said why don't you ask that man, pointing to me (knowing that I competed in olympic lifting). So I showed him. I went ATF and told him this way will build up your quads, hams, & glutes allowing him to do the most work in the smallest amount of time. Can't beat full range of movement.
