i am going to puerto rico for week sunday.

is there anything i should make sure i see, what are considered the best beaches, and can anyone recommend a good gym to train at?

thanks.

Definatly head over to Luquillo Beach in P.R. it is one of the most beautiful beaches (to me) in P.R.

Also you can't say the words Puerto Rico without seeing a national landmark there called "EL MORRO" With a history that dates 500 years, this stone structure truly deserves its place of honor in the National Historic Register. The English and the Dutch attacked the Morro repeatedly in its time. Located on the San Juan Bay, the six-story fort was originally constructed in 1540, although its exterior walls were not erected for another 200 years. Inside the walls is a veritable labyrinth of chambers, barracks, hallways and prison cells. The fort was given a complete facelift in 1992.

Also near by "El Morro" there are many high fashion shops and bars and returaunts. It's like 4 blocks in each direction you'll find high end watch stores, dresses, suits for men, Planet hollywood, you name it.

Also make sure to head over to a place called "EL YUNQUE" It's a true
sub-tropical rainforest. Very beautiful place to visit. And since it's atop of a mountain there is a tower there when you get to the top you had better take a camera with you because a picture is truly worth a thousand words.

Now as for a gym? thats a toughy, however many of the cops on the island speak english. If you see a good built cop feel free to ask him where is the nearest gym. Those guys are pretty cool and don't mind helping you one bit!

I was in San Juan the year before last and loved it. It was on a cruise, so I only got to spend a few hours there. That's one of those places I would love to go back too and spend a couple of days. The water is beautiful, and the beaches looked amazing. I don't think you can go wrong on any of them.

you must pay homage to the Bacardi Distillery!
Make you check out Old San Juan, and check some local restaurants and make sure you order some Mofongo!
You can take a boat ride over to Vieques which has some real cool snorkeling sites.

thanks everyone for your responses.

i am going on a 12 day-9 island cruise and when we disembark in puerto rico i rented a house right on the rainforest (i dunno if its el yunque or not boomshaker- but i'll be sure to check it out nonetheless)

as for gyms, i know there are golds/world and powerhouse guys there, just was hoping someone would have some feedback. i guess it wouldn't hurt to go to all 3- it is a vacation right? heh.

there is alot of history in that country, san juan being the oldest city in the americas, i think.

we like to dive so this should take up a good chunk of time, and if the snorkeling is good, the diving should be too then.

thanks all.

I didn't get to see much we just walked around (we got in late 6PM) had to be back on the boat by 11 PM so we ate a a HARD Rock Cafe' and walked around the shops and took a carriage ride.

I'll post some pics tonight.

Beautiful historic island.

What line are you cruising on?
The gyms on Carnival were actually pretty good dbells up to 120 and benches and tons of Kaiser machines.
got some real good work outs there. Ate trained ate ate ate ate grew grew grew....

I'm an avid scuba diver, so if you are interested in that then I suggest the following diving location and dive shop:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desecheo_Island

http://www.tainodivers.com
(go to "PHOTOS" and then click on the pic)

The divemaster is from the States, and has lived there for over a decade now, I do believe. That is absolutely some of the finest diving in the world! 75 to 150+ foot of visibility at all times. However, I'm not sure where all you will be going. Rincon is on the west side of the island. I toured the entire island, and dove at all the major spots.

Check out http://www.rinconpr.com, as well.

thanks again for the feedback everyone-

MassiveG-

i'm glad to hear the gyms are well equipped on the cruise ship- i was expecting row upon row of step machines and a room with exercise balls.

i am going with royal caribbean and it doesn't have much on the ships info about the gym., so i'll just keep my fingers crossed.

i hear there is no shortage of food though. heh heh.

Jarconis-

you know everyone says that too me, but i wont enjoy my trip if i don't train. when i was younger i know i was addicted to the gym, and it was unhealthy.

now i train cause i love it, not cause i have to. in fact i was in thailand for 2 months last year and the nearest gym was a 45min walk along the beach into little village i was nearest. i walked in and trained prolly 4-5 times a week. weird eh? lol.

BubbafromBama-

much thanks for the links. i am looking forward to getting under the water as soon as i can. i will agree and say that i have found the best visibility to be in the caribbean.

in fact the only place i have heard of that blows your mind in terms of visibility is the red sea. our DM in thailand said there were divers who would have panic attacks when going under for the first time cause all you see is an endless wall of blue. crazy.

i have been thinking about disappearing to belize for a month in april to get my advanced ticket at glovers atoll. i'd be just in time for the whale sharks. the week there costs $850 for your little hut on stilts over the water/ meals/ 12 dives including the 'blue hole' and your certification as well. then i think i could get in close to 50 dives that month and i'd be well on my way to getting my DM, which is my ultimate goal.

thanks again for the links- they'll be put to good use.

Dragonfire-

you brought back some memories with that word- lol.

i had a friend and that was his word of the month for at least half a year. everything was chupocapra. he trained like a chupocapra, ate like a chupocapra, had sex like a chupocapra. lol. i had forgotten all about that till now.

if i see one i'll be sure to take a pic, but i'll be very surprised if i don't end up with an ass full of buck-shot from prowlling around on some farmers ranch at nite looking for one. have you seent hat you-tube vid? very real. makes you think.

:)

Hmmmmm, just like a candy store plus they are sweet as hell to talk to and very friendly, check out some of the suggestions above which are good ones. Also, get a tourist guide!
