i just got a new laptop and im setting up a wireless network at my house. the guy at bestbuy said that i need to encrypt this network so other people cant get on my internet and steal my information...

so anyone know how i do this? they want to charge me like $150 to come out and do it...screw that

im sure you guys can help :D

First, what type of wireless router do you have, vender & model, and how new is it? You will want to set it up for WPA/AES encryption at least if at all possible. I use WPA2. I also set a MAC address pool so that it only accepts a connection from certain computers. Let me know the router type and we'll proceed.

The directions to protect your router will tell you how to password protect your wireless network. You will need to connect your laptop to the router with an ethernet cable and "log on" to your router. Its really not hard at all if you have the manual that came with your router. Also if you dont live in an condo/apartment complex I wouldn't be all that worried about encryping your wireless connection.

ok Kaiser...its a netgear 54 MBPS wireless router

2.4 GHz

supposed to have 100 feet coverage. its not that wide of an area...im tryin to only cover a section of my house...but its near the back corner of my house and will definitaly work outside...

i bought it today..so its brand new

nevermind guys...i got it :D

WPA2 :p

Yea it's WPA2....funny I just found this forum. I got a BS in networking. I love this site more and more.
