i've had shoulder problems for some time now but in the last 2-3 yrs it seems to have gotten worse.if i'm sedentary for long periods,i.e. not wotking out or doing physical labor, they usually don't bother me.i'm not back in the gym yet due to my crazy hectic work hours(10-12hrs a day,6 days a week)doing landscaping and now they're killing me,esp my right one.at work it just gets "tired" faster than the left.the problem is when i lay down to go to sleep.no matter how i lay down or what position i'm in my right shoulder will start to hurt, and i mean HURT,within an hour or so of me laying down.it starts off in the shoulder area, goes down my arm,and into my hands.so much so that my fingers become hot and numb and will actually start to swell like a boxers glove.the pain is so intense i get up at least 5-6 times a night to sit up and shake it out.i recently came across a file i had downloaded about joint injuries and the symptoms match something called "impingement syndrome".does anyone here have any knowledge of it and also do you think a cortisone shot would help.since i don't have medical insurance an operation(which i know i more than likely need)is not an option at the moment.thnx for any help,f/b,input and opinions."rocco-x":)

Could be a number of things. Tendinitis, Arthritis, Rotate Cuff.
Best to have a Physician look at it.

I’ve had shoulder pain in my right shoulder for years. Found out it was Tendinitis & early stages of Arthritis.

Deep tissue massage

If you don't have insurance that might be your most cost effective option,I have an impingement also and i won't get surgery. I get the massages and train shoulders without pressing movements most times.I don't have the pain you have so ialso have had this for 8 years,I slid into the bottom of the boards playing ice hockey.

How ironic. I know exactly what your going through cause I'm going
through the same thing with my left shoulder. Not sure if I injured it
or what but sleeping at night is a total nightmare literally.
Plus I'm also a landscaper and yes it's hard enough to make gains without
overtraining plus the agony of dealing with shoulder problems.
I have no insurance either. Not much help but I figured I'd let you
know your not alone.

I had the same, went through physical therapy, then injections, and finally surgery. The surgery worked very well, it has only been 6 weeks or so, however it feels much better and it is rehabbing fast. I started hitting the gym within a week and been there every since, it gets better every day.

Been there, done that

Are you doing your rotator strengthening and flexibility/range of motion exercises? Try those first and of course, stay away from any pressing movements in the gym that hurt. A shot of cortisone in the shoulder may be the next step if it does not improve with some time. Any doctor will try the most conservative approach first.

had shoulder surgery over a yr ago to release a nerve impingement in shoulder... can you still kick up dbs into place and balance them on pressing moves? Do you have issues with db curls with the elbow wanting to flare out? Does your trap seem to bunch up on the bad side making dbell laterals impossible to do properly?

Mine does all of the above...I just had surgery on my left shoulder about 2 months ago for impingement, torn labrum, thickened supraspinatus tendon and the DR took out some of my bursa...Any Idea how long before I am back up to par

I had a labral tear(left shoulder)& it took about 4-6months after surgery to get back 70-80% of My strength & then last 20% or so came over the following yr...I got pumps in it due to the scar tissue for about a yr all the time(doin back, bis, chest, shoulders or tris)

I had a similar problem which was actually bicep impingement syndrome.
the muscles in my shoulder/rotator cuff were very tight causing pinching on the bicep muscle.
Would wake up 3-4 times a night stretching my arm, and in the morning went through hell, but got better as the day went on.

Had a massage and few cracks here and there and it is as good as new and im pushing as normal.
Your vertebrae may be out of whack caushing pressure on your shoulder pinching a nerve. Go to an Osteopath and get it checked out, before you have a chronic pain 24/7. 2 sessions, 2 massages $150 later and im good as new.

shoulder impingement

4 weeks ago had surgery on my right hip for hip impingement... basically the same concept.. the bone, in my case the femur, had an extra bone spur that when i passed a certain angle was hitting the cartilage of the joint. basically over time the cartilage deteriorates and this can be painful. Down the road this wearing of the cartilage leads to arthritis. My surgery repaired the damaged cartilage and shaved down the bone spur so that they no longer came in contact... there are similar procedures for shoulders and they are much less complicated than the hip... as far as the shot i had one and it did relieve the pain for around a month. However even though the pain was gone the underlying problem is not fixed and the damage to the join will continue. what youre experiencing could be a wide range of problems so i would not try to self diagnose, i would recommend seeing a doc..hope this helps

I hurt my shoulder a while back and I went to a chiropractor that specialized in A.R.T (Active Release Technique) and it did wonders for me. When I went in he told me I had a couple of impingements in my shoulder and he was able to break up the scar tissue. :) I would give it a shot before you start getting cortisone shots or surgery. Just a suggestion. :)

Ditto, had my left shoulder completely rebuilt over a year ago and just starting to get back to normal training. I had a torn labrum, cuff was completely torn, and they removes some of the bursa. Long story short they were supposed to be just a 2hr surgery and a 2-3 month recovery, ha the surgery was over 9 hours they put 2 plates and 8 screws in. I was in PT for almost 8 months. Now over a year later like i said i am just starting to train heavy again, but am limited on certain movements.

Be patient and make sure you do your therapy especially ranging your shoulder as often as possible

I could not agree more with you.

sports doc told me i had impingment in both shoulders. wanted to do surgery on both. but i went to a rehab clinic they gave me some stretches to do and i started glucasamine conjiontent and in about 30 days it was not bothering me at all. but i did have to get back on the glucosamine last month. but its been 2 years.

Speaking of Doggcrap...google doggcrapp towel stretch. It has helped me a lot.

If you have insurance by all means see a specialist. Everyone in this thread has given viable solutions to your problem though if you don't have insurance. If for nothing else the specialist will set you up with rotator cuff exercises that will address your problem.

The DC towel/broom stretch is a great tool no doubt about that. My body needs purposeful amounts of external rotation, and rear delt work to keep my shoulders healthy.

I'm doing that today, I've heard nothing but good things about ART.

I had my rotator cuff done last year. shoulder is back to 100%. don't let surgery scare u just make sure u pick a good doctor. i went to the milwaukee brewers shoulder ortho. he did a great job. all he does is shoulders and rotators.
