BP,
The Cal Collegiates is "Lonnie's show" (he promotes it), so he's naturally going ot tell you do that one. In the past the competition wasn't good, but last year it was not bad. I would think about it if it is a NQ (not sure).
Also, if I recall, Lonnie's show is in the summertime, so its after some of the bigger shows in CA. For exposure, you'll want to think about trying to peak for several shows together. In CA, the orange county is about a month before "the Cal" I think, which is tough as hell, but a great way to network - lots of big names there. There might be some other NQ's in NV or AZ, or near you that you can squeeze in during that time.
Personally, since you're just getting started, I would try to do as many NQ's as possible w/in a couple months, get some good experience and exposure, and perhaps really focus on peaking for one for your shot at national qualification. This, more than likely, might NOT be the Cal shows (unless its Lonnies), as these are some of the toughest to win at the NQ level...
Check npconline.com for a schedule, but also look in the mag's etc, as some of the shows don't seem to get on there sometimes for some reason (even NQ's).
Hope this helps.
