ok guys.....help me out here.....just started walking outdoors for fat loss....

i am not walking all that fast......i am huffing and puffing and even get shin splints.....i know this is to be expected.....i am very out of shape due to only lifting weights and completely neglecting my cardio......how often should i walk.....what can i do to become more proficient at walking......burning fat

and how do i alleviate my shin splints??? any special stretching i should be aware of???

thanks

Asics are great shoes just be sure to get the right type for your feet. Depending on your arch height and stride. Doing some light streching after you walk will help. But mostly it just takes time to get used to it.

yes I used to get horrible shin splints just from walking as well.
went to a running store where they fitted me with some asics that supported the shape of my feet. made all the difference in the world.

my suggestions would be to find a specialty running store and explain to them your situation, they should be able to help you out.

Part of it is just getting used to the walking as well. You're probably going to be sore for a while no matter what you're wearing for shoes. Stretch, massage, and ice are all helpful for shin splints in my experience.

i had shin splints that eventually developed into stress fractures because I didn't want to take time off during rugby season...so be carefull.

my PT gave me some exercises that helped...

one...put a towel down on the floor in front of your couch. Sit with your bare feet on the towel and without moving your heels, gather the towel toward you by using your toes to scrunch it up. Extend toes, scrunch...extend toes...scrunch...repeat.

two...walk around your house with your toes pulled up off the ground.

three..walk backwards on a 1% incline on a treadmill.

I also found that when they got really bad, imersion icing was the way to go...dunk them in a cooler of ice water.

This is exactly it! I have found that the type of shoes you were makes a world of a difference. So I would recommend going and getting fitted and picking up some new kicks. I just bought a new pair of Pumas for doing agility drills and sprints but, they turned out to be to flat and they gave me shin splints. So I had to go buy a new pair of runnign shoes : (

Am I missing something here? You are huffing and puffing from walking! Yet you can lift weights? If walking makes you out of breath, how can you lift? This intrigues me. I neglected cardio for a very long time, yet was still able to lift weights. Since incorporating cardio, I know my lifting is much better, but I never got out of breath from walking!

I see exactly what brisk walk means by this. I am in GREAT bodybuilding shape right now but when it comes to athleticism and cardio shape I'm so out of shape, it's sick. I'm taking a lifeguard class in 3 weeks and I've been trying to get in shape for it..swimming five days a week, high reps, lots of HIIT. I swim 2 laps and I am winded. Bodybuilding is great and all for building strength and muscle mass but when it comes to applying it to cardio and endurance-based sports its horrible. Your better off sitting on the couch with a 6 pack of Newcastle and a box of Krispy Kreme. Okay, that may be pushing it but you get the point :p

YOu just have to work up slowly into your walking routine. You have done the equivalent of overtraining at this point and need to rest. I used to get that every fall when I went back to college. I wasnt used to walking so much and it would tear me up. I used to not be able to get to my next class because my shins were in such pain. Rest them and decrease either your frequency or duration or a combo of the two.

Another thing to keep in mind if you are getting out of breathe just because of walking is your heart health. I know when I had my cardiomyopathy I was able to lift ok but when it came to cardio, forget it. If youre on some AAS now and have been for awhile, I would think about that.
