Alot of pros in thier training videos wear belts during the entire workout.

Is this to keep the waist tight and core muscles contracted?

IF so, does this really work to keep the waist small?


I have only ever worn my belt when needed....heavy squats, deadlifts etc
 
You are right to only wear it when needed. Relying on a belt all the time has the opposite effect you stated. it can compromise stability muscles and trunk strength. You need to let the trunk do it's job unaided. I used to wear a belt all the time too, I now do not wear one at all. Not needed!! For some it is a secutrity blanket and others a fashion statement!!
