was it just the introduction of gh and slin to the game that created these mass monsters

it seems like you went from these guys that looked like greek statues to absolute freaks these days

it seems to me like the biggest changes occured during the mid to late 80s and the early 90s i guess i would call dorian yates the first true mass monster.

IMHO the use of MASSIVE doses of T in the early 90's (3g's and up)made a big difference, and then adding HGH to the mix in the mid 90's took it up another notch.

I would venture many different things coming into play. Besides the all ready stated I would guess the duration of use aka some not cycling off ever would factor in. Of course not training 4 hours a day 6 days a week goes a long way towards increasing recovery translating into more growth.

Like many things progression is the natural course of things.

insulin happened, and guys kept pulling the plunger back farther and farther on their syringes.

i know genetics has a lot to do with it but basically i can attain a physique like the arnold and zane days by staying off gh and just sticking to aas

Like anything else, a combination of things contribute to the changes...I wish things were still the way they were in the 70s...better physiques then in my opinion.

But the changes mediate from improved knowledge of training, science and nutrition, higher doses of gh, use of insulin, and more variety of AAS taken at MUCH higher doses than before...

insulin
HGH
IGF
MGF
.....

One word...MORE

More weights( heavier)
More Protein
More Gear (Oils,tabs,slin,HGH...)
More money
And of course...more than the law allows.:p

Values.
Judges may have been more aware of proportion as it relates to height in the earlier days. It would be interesting to see how someone like Jay or Ronnie would place in a contest in the mid 70s. They'd probably win on account of being something that no one had ever seen before...
nonetheless, freakiness seems to dominate over aesthetics these days. can we say Flex Wheeler?

im a powerlifter at heart here, so forgive me but, isnt it bodyBUILDING, not sculpting right?
idk, if u continuously build and thru trial and error and technology push thru barriers, u build a bigger better more efficient - machine, body, etc
its human progression, knowledge of past BBR coupled with ego drive to be the biggest they can be, it kinda seems logical to me

if we as humans would settle, wed still drive Model-T's and there would be a airplane that barely flew lol

frk

Wow such a good post. Never thought about it that way lol.

Just my .02

Andreas Munzer was the zenith of bodybuilding, if ''body building'' is understood as the expression of the classical aesthetic. Unfortunately, that level of extreme conditioning makes you die - so there was nowhere else to go as per progress other than inhuman mass.

I kind of agree

But, They are a lot of people that love the 20's - 40's Hot Rods, classic cars of the 50's, muscle cars of the 60's. Those cars were less effecient, much more dangerous, and overall no where near the overall quality of most cars today. Yet they bring back fond memories, have a fondness in all of our hearts, and command pretty pennies at the major auto auctions.

Improved genes & improved knowledge...

I remember Lee Haney being interviewed after he had won his 3rd or 4th Mr. Olympia. The interviewer asked him, "How many Mr. Olympias to you think you can win? Can you top Arnold's record?" Lee answered, saying something like, "I'm gonna keep competing, but you never know what Mother Nature is gonna whop up next. I believe that the guys with the best genetics for bodybuilding, better than mine, probably aren't even lifting weights. But as the money improves they will come."

I think he was right. Plus, the widespread distribution of drugs and information about how to use them has had a huge impact. What was once only known by a handful of bodybuilders in a few gyms around the country is now readily available information on the internet. What was kept secret by the professionals is now out in the open on forums like this. Arnold never admitted anything beyond saying he took "some" steroids only a few weeks before a competition while dieting. Now we have guys listing 15 different substances that they use, how they use them, when, what quantities, etc.. Couple that info with one-in-a-million genetics and that's how we have the hundreds, maybe thousands, of damn-good bodybuilders today (worldwide).

That's my take on it anyway.
