What's a good 'Muscle Beach' gym to hit?

I'm going to California in a few weeks - to Anaheim specifically.
On the map it looks like it's not too far from a myriad of beaches.
I thought it would be cool to hit a "Muscle Beach" gym while I'm out there.
Can anyone recommend one for me?
One of those ones like you see in the mags where the equiptment is outside and the protein shakes flow like honey...

Go to Gold's in Venice! It's where it all started. Not sure if you have to be a Gold's member. You might want to call them and ask if you can do a day pass. Venice is 39 miles, however, from Anaheim so I don't know if taht's too far. It's also not an outdoor gym -- not sure about the Flowing Shakes! (Is that a singing group?)

I think he means the Pig Pen. It's jiust down the street from Golds (Gold's used to operate it) that's pretty close to the beach. I went there in the 80's. It was just a fenced-in area with free weights - rather rusty (ocean air)

It was a real circus People all over the outside of the fence watching (staring) at you working out

More Ideas

I think you should check out Venice/Muscle Beach/Max Muscle/Firehouse for a day, but you really should consider checking out "The Strand"- boardwalk where all the beautiful people walk, skate, and ride along the beach in Hermosa and Manhattan Beach. Now is the time- tons of skin, weather is beautiful, and you don't have as many homeless derelicts and gang members as you do in Venice area.

Hermosa Beach is basically a straight-shot down the 91 freeway to the ocean from Anaheim- you want to go to pier avenue there or to Manhattan Beach Blvd in MB (that street dead ends at ocean/pier).

When/how long will you be here for? The Manhattan Beach AVP (#1 Pro volleyball tournement) is weekend of Aug 19 -21 - and great afterparty thrown by Stuff magazine at Hermosa club Sat. 29th.
