FYI:
Gym owner jailed over steroid importation
Tuesday, 8 February 2005
The Australian Customs Service says the sentencing of a 57-year-old gym owner from south-west NSW highlights the vigilance of officials looking for performance-enhancing drugs.
Yesterday in Bathurst District Court, Albury man Lawrence Butler, 57, was sentenced to two years jail.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to six charges of importing steroids and chemicals used in the manufacture of the illegal drug speed.
Customs' director of investigations in NSW, Robert Viles, says customs inspects all international mail.
"There were eight items intercepted in the international mail - they had come from Malaysia and they were identified on the outside as vitamin B tablets, they were tested and were found to indicate they were ephedrine," he said.
