Are deadlifts necessary?

Do you think that deadlifts (both traditional and stiff legged) are necessary for proper glute and hamstring development?

Or

Do you think that 'ass to grass' squats could be sufficient to build good glutes and hamstrings (pre-exhausting hamstrings with curls).

Please feel free to offer your thoughts.

Is Marvin Gaye?

Seriously though, I tried ATG squats and pre-exhaust, and etc, etc, nothing worked, I'm doing deads now and getting pretty good results.

Designbuilt, is that just normal dedlifts or straight legged aswell?

deadlifts are ok

i don't personally feel like they are the "end all be all"

i think hyperextensions are very effective for the lower back and also the hamstrings

a much safer alternative to deadlifts

but deadlifts performed occasionally are ok in my book.

Pretty much both, I mainly do stiff legged on the checkered plate platform right after squats, but once in a while off the floor regular old deads.

"no reason to live if you can't do deadlift". words from the greatest strongman of all time, who are we to argue..... :)

I just started doing dead lifts this year at the age of 40. I just never did them. My power on all my other lifts has increased significantly and my lower back problems have started to go away after years. Now I'm taking some gear for the first time and I know that has a little to do with this but not all.

I never thought they were necessary but if I could turn the clock back I would have become an avid deadlifter.

The traditional full range deadlift for back, gave me a couple injuries, and the movement was just ackward for me, but rack pulls and stiff legs are a staple in my training, leg curls can't get close to what stiff legs do for my hams, and rack pulls have helped me thicken up my back for sure.

True. Two things that Zap my hamstrings hard are sldl's and Sprints!

no...i dont think its necessary for "proper" glute, ham development....but,

is it necessary for a strong, powerful, wellbuilt physique....especially in the back????(calves, glutes, hams, lats, traps)......yes

I love heavy stiff-legs for hams - nothing feels quite the same nor makes me as sore.

I only do rack-deads now for back, but I love them. They make a huge difference in upper back thickness.

Deadlifts are the real king of lower body exercises. It's one of those exercises that you only do if you're serious about lifting. If you squat, and deadlift...you have arrived. A lot of people disrespect these two moves due to lower back strain and bad knees, but I swear, my lower back keeps feeling better and better after heavy deadlifts.

What do you guys think is overall better for back - deadlifts or barbell rows? And what about rack pulls as well?

not necessarily

There are other exercises that can be just as effective for glutes and hammies. Good mornings work very well. Reverse hypers work very well.

I get the best results from heavy deadlifts verses any other movement that stresses the same muscles. There is something special about them. It builds functional strength like nothing else, in my book. I just imagine a 3000 pound car is trapping someone I care about under its weight and the surge of testosterone, gh and adrenaline starts pumping and I swear ONLY deadlifts makes me feel this POWERFUL. It's my favorite ego booster and I just happen to be good at 'em so that helps. I hit deads once a week and every week I'm stronger in all my lifts.

I personally do SLDL (hammy/glute focus) these days more often and do barbell bent-over rows as my one of my staples for my back.

Alfresco:

"What can detract from a physique in my opinion is an
overly developed low back / spinae erector. It can grow
to such a large degree that it can actually overshadow
their upper back. Try as they may, most are never
successful at overcoming this imbalance".

Alfresco, good point, yes this is a major concern of mine and part of the reason behind my post. Personally I am quite tall 6.2. and with a very thin frame, this can have its drawbacks asthetically, however one of the plus points is that I have a tiny waist and have the potentialfor a great v-taper. So I dont wont to maybe jeoperdise this by developing the lower back to any great extent. But I still want good glutes and Hams

Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

Barbell rows hands down! Deadlifts, when performed with a proper form preventing you from any possible injury, can help... for lower back, traps and hamstrings.

At least IMO. :)

In my opinion, people that are very good a squats, have
great form (like perpendicular) tend to have great low
back and hamstring development.

In most cases, that's what I've noticed too!

Next question . . . are they healthy / good for you?
Well, unquestionably, deadlifts place an inordinate
amount of compression on your body.

A chiropractor I once saw years ago (one of the few
good ones, who did more good than harm) recommended
hyper extensions as the best exercise of glute / ham-
string / low-back development there is. And properly
performed, completely safe. Zero compression on the
spine. Thats the key for long term back health.

I couldn't agree more with the above statements!! :)

Barbell rows hands down!

How do you think bent over dumbbell rows compare to barbell rows? I do dumbbell rows, but I never do barbell rows - are they basically working the same muscles, or are the barbell ones better?

I'm looking for some good exercise for lats/middle back.. My lower back and trap are more developed IMO, and I've been doing deadlifts lately, but I'd rather switch it up I think to something focusing more on the middle back.
