I have to admit that I have had nowhere near the amount of motivation that I used to have. I still am very very consistent, but I find myself going through the motions and not putting as much effort into it as I could/should. Part of this is from nagging injuries and tendinitis that gets me down but I think part of it may be because of where I train. (this idea is sparked from the hardcore gyms thread)
My "club" is high-priced and fully featured. 24 hours, all the equipment you could imagine, pool, jacuzzi, hell they have a soccer field on the roof with elevators. The selection of equipment is nice but the place is filled with people. Lots of good-looking girls, though. I can't help but think that if I trained at a different gym, my results would be better.
I've noticed local competitions have 1/3 of the amount of competitors that they used to, and this seems to be a common theme across the country.
People ARE becoming more health-conscious and economical/efficient. The latter because we have to. But as far as health is concerned, there are many more people who are stopping the powerlifting/strongman stuff and losing a bunch of weight, becoming "normal" people once again. They can't justify spending all the money on food, gear, etc just so they get some crappy trophy.
There are many bodybuilders who are more conservative now, and less balls-to-the-wall mentality, which is GREAT for health and longevity, but to be the pinnacle of absolute peak freak performance, not exactly. People are getting increasingly more lazy, and I'd probably have to include myself in that group.
Are all "underground" sports losing their fan base and athletes to some degree?
