I hope this does not break any board rules here, but i want to get your opinions on the situation in Arizona and the immigration laws they have in place. Do you all think it is a good thing to have the state handle this or should it be a federal responsibility?

All opinions are welcome, lets keep this thread open and civil, this is simply a discussion to get different points of view.

its not going to be handled federally.

I said it before ill say it again, Obama is going to grant amnesty to EVERY illegal alien in this country VERY SOON. I would say in the next 3-6 months, before the November elections.

The government is charged with protecting our borders. But the government refuses to do what 70% of the American population is in favor of, enforcing the immigration laws. Thumbs up to Arizona for having the balls to do something the rest of the states (hello California) won't do!

Dalvare1, I'm in Concord, CA, I feel your pain brother.

really very simple.. IT IS CALLED ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION FOR A REASON.. IT IS ILLEGAL!!! no other country including mexico would tolerate this violation of its law.. the mexican pres even said he demands paper work and proper documentation for anyone in his country.. yet thinks we should not here.. why? because he wants the money that the illegals send back.. so if no other country allows this, no matter how liberal the country may be, then why do we?.. well, because they want the spanish vote.. and are afaid this will make them upset.. how silly .. but our nations security and welfare at risk so they can garner votes..

then they will all be draftable to fill the ranks of the armed services. send them all to afghanistan and north korea.

If only California would adopt this law. Good for Arizona. I'm an American Citizen, that immigrated here from the Philippines. If your here legally, what have you to be afraid of. Sure, a law enforcement officer can stop me and ask me for my papers or passport, because he or she may racially profile me, and I'll gladly hand it over. The issue isn't profiling, it's illegal immigration.

Every illegal is a criminal already the very second he crosses our border. we need muchh better border patrols/walls

well said...and its disgusting. The liberals are the cause of all of this ..period

The Mexican Pres. wants the Money the illegals send to their familys. About 5 Million + per year i beleive. Peace.

^^^^ i read a couple articles on this awhile back,i dont remember the exact amount but i think it was more like 8-10 billion per year.

In regard to Arizona's immigration law, I quote Jeffrey Miron, lecturer at Harvard University: "This law is incredibly misguided. Enforcement will be selective, inflaming ethnic and racial tensions. Police resources are better utilized pursuing crimes like homicide, rape, and theft. And the measure’s impact on immigration will be modest in any case.

The only way to reduce illegal immigration is to expand legal immigration; punitive, “supply side” measures will not work so long as the wage gap between Mexico and the U.S. persists."

That final sentence is not only very important, but also very intuitive.

Let the states decide same way EU states do.

Maybe borrow imigration doctrine from Mexico word for word, that would of course be fair.

In Mexico, non-citizen imigrants can't own property, illigal imigrants can't even rent property, and the police can (and do) demand imigration documents at any time.

Everyone keeps saying that the AZ law is discriminatory, however, the Fed immigration law is much worse. Problem is, the feds WILL NOT enforce the law!!! Federal law over rules any state law, in this case, AZ is simply adhering to the LAW. Remember when ICE was doing all the crackdowns in the factories a few years back, the fucking ACLU was up in arms because they were deprting everyone, stating it violated their rights... what rights? If you are not an American, you do not have American rights, point blank! My best friends family is from the Dominican, he was born here and his dad has his green card. His mom married him and became a citizen, however she wanted to do it on her own. She taught herself English by watching TV and talking with me and took her citizenship test...and passed!

These topics are always so debated, they make for good conversation. In one way or another we have all been the recipient of the work of illegals, it is true. If you have bought a burger, house, or anything here you can not deny this.

However there are laws that have to be upheld and we have to be clear on what they are. They may not be fair but they have to be upheld. Any decision made will upset one side or the other, thats just the way it is.

vigilantism is the only way anything will get done

Agree 100%, it's funny how this current president goes on national circuits talking about how bad the formal adminstration was. But every single thing he has doen has been pretty much a page out of Bush jr's play book. Bush jr tried to win the latin vote by trying to make the illegals "undocumented workrs" and thus getting their vote. WELL, that was handled very poorly. Now it's OBAMAs turn to try and win the illegal latin vote. Problem is you will not have enough illegal voters to come out of the wood works to support this idea. Bush jr found this out very quickly. No matter what you give them they are still scared they are of illegal staus and thus stay behind closed doors.

theyr not scared enough my man, cuz there still too many here

I find it funny how even most of the media is in denial...saying things like "what does an illegal immigrant even look like" - when talking about the possibility of racial profiling. Obviously if you're white or black chances are you're probably not illegal, but if you look hispanic you're much more likely to be an illegal...exspecially if you don't speak english and don't have any kind of ID or papers!!!
Sure racial profiling is bad in many circumstances but the fact of the matter is that they should be profiling in this circumstance. Think of it like this: if someone calls the cops and says they were robbed at gun point by a black male, are the cops gonna stop and arrest a white female in the general location of the crime? fuck no they aren't, so therefore racial "profiling", or whatever you wanna call it, is needed in some circumstances.

When looking at the issue, be careful you do not commit to a logical line of irrelevance, ie a genetic fallacy in regard to "racism"... This does not add much to the fundamental issue surrounding the law, or further yet, the underlying principle of immigration into the country.

I think that if one were to take the time to think about the incentives that immigrants face, as well as business owners who hire these immigrants, one could see where the dichotomy is in making things so difficult on immigrants. Might I also suggest that these policing resources are being wasted; they are taking away from the productivity which we could ultimately all benefit from in the form of wealth creation.

Also, just to throw this out there... the defense for Arizona that immigrants bring crime is nonsense. There is a negative relation between immigration and crime, that is as immigration increases crime has decreased over the last decade (by nearly 20%; crime on average around the US has dropped over the last decade too but not at the same rate). Though I must also comment at this point that immigration has increased at less a marginal rate. Immigrants who came, say 5-10 years ago, simply stayed due to difficulty of getting BACK if they left.

Some tend to look at issues like this with a very subjective lens. It is much more telling to look at the data, the trends, and be as objective as possible. Then you can see what is most efficient for everyone.
