Blood presure question

I was at my dads today and he has one of those wrist monitors to check your presure. It showed me at 160/110. Ive used his monitor before and it has been really high on it before. But when i check my bp at the grocery store its always normal 120/80 or around there. Anyone know what the deal could be. The monitor is working because my dads bp seems normal

I am not a big fan of the wrist models. The regular above the elbow battery operated monitors seem to always be accurate. I keep a log of my BP when I feel it might be creeping up again. Were you a bit stressed or in any kind of pain?

no not stressed at all...i really dont have any stress in my life. a grocery store i go to often has a newer one that goes around the forearm and that gave me a normal reading of 120/80 range...i just freak out when i see 160/110 on the wrist one.

BP varies depending on posture, stress even talking. Talking being one of the worse, try it.

Have a discussion with someone and take your BP while talking you can spike to 200/120

so if your chatting with your dad or stressed out by him etc... could explain the high readings.

In the store your alone so you take the time to relax before the test.. but yeah wrist machines are less accurate. TBH for accurate readings you need to take it in exactly the same position everyday.

What i do, i sit on bed, stack all the pillows under my left arm so that my arm is about level with my heart, put on the cuff take about 10 deep slow breaths, then breath normally for 30 sec , then start the machine.

Experiment with it, youll see you get very different readings depending on if your standing , talking laying down etc...

try changing the pressure setting on your dads. i had to do that one time and got back a TOTALLY different reading. -JS
