There is a real bodybuilder on the reality show "Big Brother" this season (Sunday, Tues, and Wed., CBS). He is a "professional" "natural" bodybuilder (I forget which federation. His name is Jessie Godderz (sp).
Anyway, the guy has a great physique (I dunno about the "natural" part, but that's beside the point). However, he's a real tool, and sort of a jerk, and is coming off as sort of narcissistic (not too much for a proud BBer, by my standards, but I can see it).
I don't think he's any worse than most of the fame-whore, egotistical idiots they pick for that show, but everyone (viewers and fellow contestants) is judging everything he says and does in light of the meat-head, dumb, stuck-up, psycho bodybuilder stereotype.
Anyway, what's getting me is that I like to sometimes discuss TV shows that I watch, on the discussion boards at Television Without Pity. I didn't expect to find a lot of bodybuilding fans there, but HOLY COW, the bodybuilder hate is just beyond all reason! This guy is most often described as looking "grotesque" (he's not even close to freaky by our standards), his motivations for getting so big are "scary" (since he must always get "negative feedback" from the public), etc. He is a bit socially retarded, so when the guy talks about his bodybuilding (which he does not do that much), it comes out a little egotistical or something, which does not help.
I posted twice on there politley defending bodybuillding and trying to separate this jerky kid from the rest of us. I got a warning from a moderator to "let people have their own opinions about bodybuilding". ***BANGS HEAD AGAINST WALL***
I have no point, just wanted to vent. I know bodybuilding is not well understood or respected but it was disheartening to see all the distaste, prejudice and misconceptions amongst the general public.
Fell free to go on that board and add your $.02, heh.
