I can't believe it. just got back from vacation and i hear the croc
hunter Steve Irwin was killed by a sting ray. I'm sure some will say
it's about time but I liked the guy so this is a shock to me. the
damn thing ran it's barb into his chest. The guy was goofy but he
never let fame go to his head. He always considered himself an average
guy nothing special. What a shame. He left a little girl and a boy.

I also liked the croc hunter. May he R.I.P.

Sad isn't it. He was so passionate about his work, his life, and his family. It was a really freaky thing. I heard this was only the 3rd time in Australian history that this has happened. The other two cases happened before the 1950's. I'm just hoping this doesn't freak people out about wanting to go to the beach or get in the water. As a surfer, I've encountered sharks and stingrays and even a dolphin or two. Jelly fish, man o' war, etc... Ran over a shark once, like hitting a log, stopped me dead in my tracks as I was dropping in on a wave. I've learned how to spot sharks that are feeding and stay away. They can sometimes get you by accident when going after groups of fish. When I got my girlfriend into surfing a year ago, she did all this research online and showed me another rare case where a stingray got a guy in the heart who died. Had to really hold her hand after that to get her out in the water. Like I've said, he was more likely to die from playing with those deadly snakes. Everyone says he died doing what he loved, which is true, observing wildlife, but it was still a highly unlikely way to go for anyone. RIP Steve Irwin. You will be remembered...

I feel terrible for his wife and kids.

I am happy that he was able to live a life he was passionate about. He jammed a lot of living into his life. I wish it hadn't happened.:(

He was a good man and I feel real bad for his wife and kids. May he rest in peace.:(

R I P
I could'nt beleive what I was hearing on the news myself:( I've sat down with my kids and watched his show for a few years now. Its sad to see him go so young, I think he was 44.

it's really sad...his poor kids. i always loved watching his shows, i liked him a lot. i guess they have the video footage of him getting stuck with the bab from the stingray and pulling it out and basically dieing instantly. apparently steve made some kind of video footage a few years ago saying that if he was to ever die on camera ( from a snake bite, shark attack, croc attack ect...) he wanted it(the video) to be made public...but his manager is saying he will never do it. it's pretty sad, on one hand it would be kind of interesting to see, but on the other, out of respect for his family it's probably not morally right. either way, i think he was a great guy who obviously loved his job and his family.

I couldn't believe it either. I thought he was awesome. Such passion, man, and fearless. He seemed to be such a genuinely good guy too. I'm gonna miss him.

|---[\\\\]>--------- rays arent possioness, so their 'barb' is like a sword? it's that sharp? must have been some big ray....do they use those things as protection or balance?

Have you not ever seen a stingray? This one was about 3-4 ft wide. The barb is poisonous and is pretty big on a ray that size. Like a small dagger maybe. Its part of the tail (spine) of the ray and it can thrust this spike in various directions. He was swimming above the ray and it thrust its tail upwards.
We get baby stingrays at our beaches during certain times of the year and people are usually more worried about stepping on the barb and having it go through their foot(which often requires surgery). People claim it to be extremely painful. This is why you do the "stingray shuffle" when playing at the beach when they're out. As a kid growing up in the ocean and being around it for 32 years, I've only been hit once and it was by a small one on the top of my foot. Hell, I caught one that was about a foot wide when I was fishing a couple of months ago. Damn stingrays. If you do catch one, just cut the line, too many horror stories about guys trying to pry the hooks from their mouth only to get jabbed by the tail. It may not seem fair, but its not worth the risk.

usually the barbs don't get much larger than 4 inches, but some have supposedly measured up to almost 12 inches. 4 inches can pierce the heart, but is must have been just blind luck for the ray. Steve musta pissed it off.

I just saw a clip of his wife and the kids getting on the plane
that was transporting his body back to Aus. Man looking at
that broke my heart. I always expected him to go by one of
thoughs damn snakes or a croc too, not a ray. That was to me
the big shock. I've seen the barbs on the back of the tails
of thoughs things and there nasty lookin. From what I understand
they can shoot thoughs things staight up and get ya.

Back to Australia? Maybe back home, I was under the impression he was off the coast of Australia. If he wasn't in Australia it was a political move because moving a body internationally is a huge ordeal. Sad shit indeed to travel with your spouse or parent in a box under the floor. I almost don't want to see the clip, has it made the net yet? That'll be sad to watch.

That's some f@cked up shit!!! People like him, are always missed........

Like most I almost couldn't believe that he had died... He was a guy who genuinely loved life... This guy will be missed!! My prayers go out to his wife and kids!! Its always sad to know that a child will have to grow up without one of their parents... Especially a guy like him, who seemed to love his family more than anything!
There was a guy on the radio the morning after it was announced making fun of him... Alot of people called in talking crap to the guy... People like that deserve to have their ass handed to them!!
