Double Pec Tear

In need of a little advice. I was in an accident recently and tore both pectoral major tendons. My doctor said that it would be preferred to surgically repair both at once, but stated that he could repair one now and then the other 4 weeks later. If I went with the later option, there would be some risk that I would lose some functionality of the muscle, but he didn't think it was that likely. The problem is that if I have both done at the same time, I will not be able to do even the most basic functional tasks (e.g., going to the bathroom) on my own for a couple weeks, let alone work. I have always heard that it is important to have tendon tears repaired as soon as possible to avoid lose of functionality of the muscle. I am 53 years old and don't compete anymore, however, I still work very hard on my physique and it is important to me. If you were in my position, would you up to do both at the same time or do one then the other?

Personally, I’d just bite the bullet and get them both done at the same time. Will suck, but at least the whole ordeal will be over with sooner.

Did you see multiple specialists or just the one? I’m an independent person and hate the idea of depending on someone to care for my needs. So it’d be a tough choice for me. Ultimately, I think I’d get them done at the same time. If you didn’t get a second or third opinion I would do so!

Man, I hope everything works out in your favor!

Yes, I went to two different Ortho surgeons, and both provided similar recommendations. I am the same way, I can't image having to rely on someone else to take care of me, even if it is only for a couple weeks.

It all depends on whether or not you have the support system you need in place? If not, then do one at a time and take the chance of losing some functionality.

I tore my pec in 2019, on an airborne op in the Army.
Complete pec minor tear off the bone. Had surgery done and it was very painful for a couple weeks. Hard to shower or wipe my ass, and that was with one.

But if it makes you feel better I was back to full lifting in 6 months, and now Im benching 500 which is more than I was prior to tearing it. You can see my scar in my profile pic (non tattooed shoulder)

I guess it really depends on your support system like others have said. You can get one done, recover, and get the other done, or get both done and basically be handicapped for a few months

Support system or not, requiring someone to do every little task for you is incredibly hard to handle even for a single day, let alone a few weeks.

Gotta piss? Come pull my pants down and then wipe my junk.

Itchy between ur legs? Tough it out or ask for help?

Wiping ur nose?

Taking a shit?

Shower?

Eating?

Calling someone on the phone?

Brushing ur teeth and shaving?

I think most people underestimate what it would be like to not be able to use both hands...

Who’s gonna wipe your ass? who’s going to feed you?
serious questions that you have to take into consideration..
Exactly. In my case I'd likely be forced to spread them out. Unless insurance is paying for a home nurse or something. No one would take care of me.

real curious to know what kind of accident?

so it took me about 4 weeks to get mine scheduled anyway, so you will be fine with that option and still have an arm free, it takes but a few weeks to get basic mobilty back after the surgery so enough time for the next arm

It took me 3-4 weeks too, but the surgeon said it took forever and they barely got it.

One then the other if it was me personally. No chance I'm asking someone to wipe ass if there's an option to avoid it

Been in the "need someone to clean me, feed me, etc" boat before. It's really awkward and embarrassing for a couple days, but once I got over my pride and just accepted the help and that it wasn't gonna be forever, it wasn't so bad. I mean, still fucking sucked, but it's not the worst thing ever.

Either way you go, I hope the surgery is successful and you're able to get back to full functionality quickly

Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it. Stupid accident. I was working on the roof of my house. Went to step on the ladder and it went out from under me. On the way down I hit the edge of the roof of my screened in porch and it jerked my arms over my head in an awkward angle causing complete tears of both peck major muscles. I have decided to do one and then the other. I don't feel like I really have the support system in place to do both. Moreover, I have a very demanding job and really can't be unable to work for 3-4 weeks, which is what it would end up being if I did both at once.

I think you're making the right decision! Doing both would require around the clock care/help. Best of luck on your recovery, keep us posted!!

Thoughts on GH during recovery? My only concern is since I am doing the repairs in stages, I don't want to do anything that will make the reattachment for the second surgery more difficult.
