Dusty Hanshaw: Thoughts and Prayers

He has another slight infection but they have it under control at this point. Breathing on his own for the most part. Temperature is good, fever is not there. They are backing off sedation every day and I expect him to be awake on Friday (unless i hear anything different).
Great news. Thank you for the update brother!!!!

That is awesome to hear

Now teaching him how to not literally inhale steaks in the future may present a bit of a challenge

We should make him chop it up and put it in his easy Mac lol

what AST/ALT? Such a misconception that if labs are good (especially just those 2), then all is good to go. That is just reckless to tell people. But hey, you got lots of followers someplace I guess. He is a massive man. That was not TRT or short blasts. To think one can grow to that size, with the gear needed, for that amount of time, without some liver damage.. again foolish. Some can handle more than others but the liver can also take a lot of damage before really showing signs. Once liver damage really SHOWS, its usually bad.

This is all out of concern for Dusty, I go to the same gym and see him all the time. If he had to be sedated for esophageal rupture, that ain`t no gerd irritation. That is all out burst vein. BUT veins in that area should not be large enough to cause issues if they burst. A damaged liver WILL cause veins to enlarge. We all seen weird abdominal veins on pooched out bellies... Yup liver damage! All this info I`m telling you is straight from a doctor. Not sure where he is My kids have been at banner good sam downtown, honor health shea, phoenix childrens, I spent a night at shea also..... THEY SUCK!! Robotic morons following a protocol book and can`t put 1+1 together. SO, since idiot doctors/nurses are not giving any ideas, keep an open mind of things to check. Liver might not be issue, but it def aint just gerd damage inflamed by choking. They almost sent my son home with a hernia after birth until I made the doctor do an actual physical exam. 3 months and they did not catch on he had hernia.... But I did! He was all cleared to check out otherwise.

Come on Dusty you got a lot more to give to this world!

The mods can delete my response if it is needed to keep the thread on track, no worries on my end.

TommyJohn, esophageal varices are very distinct if you have ever seen them, have you? You see Dusty in the gym a lot per your own words, did you happen to see these varices? You can not mistake the condition, and he does wear tanks and cut-off sleeve shirts, so i'm sure you have noticed them being that you pay so much attention to him?

Dusty gets labs and doctor visits in frequently per him and those who know him IRL, so you are going to say that no physician or health professional never noticed these varices out of all the times he had visits? Come on man, stop speaking out of your ass!

You wrote, "All this info i'm telling you is straight from a doctor." Are you this doctor? If so, i'd expect a better response. If not, why do you bag on medical professionals, those in the ER or ICU at that having to make a quick diagnosis, yet use them as a source for your armchair diagnostic response in this thread? Are you insinuating that something as simple as esophageal varices can not be seen by any of the hospital staff where Dusty is at, or has visited prior?

You made up that he had a 'burst vein.' Who the hell mentioned his condition was from a bursted vein, or are you making it up from your edumacation? Esophageal ruptures can be caused by various methods....one being large pieces of food getting stuck in the esophagus and damaging or perforating the TISSUE. They can also occur by vomiting, tissue erosion from conditions like GERD, and can even occur spontaneously for rare reasons. None of this has to do with esophageal varices caused from liver damage, which he had no signs of measures of. Dante politely explained this in his original response to you, and you for some reason wanted to come back with the rude post above? Seriously man, have a little tact or respect. Not sure why you felt the need to come off like you did. This thread isn't the place for disrespectful discourse or differences over what may or may not be the cause of his rupture.

My wife and I donated. We hung out (ate after the show with Dusty and Evian at the Jr. Nationals in Chicago (2010) Then we went down to Phoenix for my gals boob job. Dusty was pretty damn cool and took me to the gym to train all week. We ate at their house and bullshitted a lot. Just a great guy. I really like Evian as well. It sucks that this has happened to him. My aunt had the same thing happen to her. She wasn’t on any drugs, so it can happen to anyone. Get well soon Dusty.

Does your aunt suffer any problems now after that happened to her? Did she ever reinjure it?

Yeah, she went in and had it stretched a couple times. She could barely eat. Got sick and threw up what little she ate constantly. Ended up dehydrated and frail. Not here anymore. It was shitty to watch happen.

Long term is it a case of controlling the acid reflux and the oesophagus will heal of its own accord given time?

I had that happen a great number of times, food getting stuck and having to throw it up. Still havent had mine stretched out. Its not bad now, but after hearing about what happened to Dusty, im nervous. I have a feeling that getting it stretched out could be dangerous too. I wonder if it could rupture doing that. Id have to get off my coumadin too, and thats dangerous and a major pain in the ass.

I think it definitely helps. Famotidine has helped me a lot. Proton pump inhibitors work better if you can tolerate them. Wish I could take them. My problem is a lot better now since I stopped drinking all alcohol. I think mine has healed up some, but food still gets stuck from time to time.

I think another theory is that food allergies/intolerances can lead to the irritation and swelling too. Nobody ever looked into that for me. i dont know if it could be a cause in mine.

Yeah, when I read this thread and Dogcrapp told the story of how it happened, it freaked me out. I though, “Oh, fuck, that sounds like my aunt Lyla.” You are right about going off blood thinners to have surgery, Maldorf. The surgery might work, but the danger of stroke is certainly magnified. It is just a dangerous situation either way. I just hope Dusty’s situation is better and that he heals up quickly. He is definitely a determined guy, with a positive outlook and that can only help.

This is great news! man i hope he pulls thru, do they know if there is gonna be any permanent issues ?

Did Dallas choke?

Last night I ate some steak and afterwards I was pinning and accidentally hit a vein and I was coughing like crazy breaking out in a sweat

There is going to be permanent issues with his esophagus and he will see a specialist for that. On the day after all this happened I suspected it was a chronic acid reflux/GERD issue....and wrote him up a total gameplan with Elisa/IgG testing etc etc etc so he and I will discuss more when he well enough to discuss. There has been a lengthy paralytic use so things are going to take some time here.

Cannot keep a good man down. After almost 3 weeks to the day, a ruptured esophagus, staff infection, pneumonia, another antibiotic resistant infection and being under medically induced sedation, he is slowly waking up. He is still quite incoherent but he did laugh today and in true Hanshaw action tried to say "one two three....up!" and then a short while later "dont worry I got it" ........its going to be quite a process of recovery....but things are looking good! Speech therapist coming in tomorrow and step by step....

Great news. Thanks for keeping us updated and best wishes for a speedy recovery - he's obviously a tough SOB and won't let this slow him down.

"white blood cell (eosinophil) builds up in the lining"

When I had my GERD, blockage, food removal, esophagus stretch done, I also had very high eosinophils in my blood-work. (like 10-fold of normal).
Since controlling the acid issue, my numbers have been back in range.
