If you dont have MS OFFICE you can get a FREE excel viewer from microsoft:

I noticed that many training methods/programs are post in XLS lately and some complained they cant open XLS pages

For a non-microsoft solution give OpenOffice a try. Download it at http://www.openoffice.org. It's free and you should be able to edit most XLS files as well.
