You americans have NO idea how well you have it.
A doz eggs here cost AU$5.00 (US$4.60). If you want organic, then you pay AU$8.50 (US$7.20)
Jeez. Glad I asked the question. I don't feel so bad anymore, lol.

Yep, I am surrounded by people who don't appreciate just how perfect this place is. On SO many levels.
The reason people ask questions - like the one I asked - is to get answers. I love this country, appreciate being here, and because I ask about the price of eggs means that I'm seeking knowledge, not condeming where I live. LOL.
I wouldn't say this place is "perfect", but I would say it's run on a very flawed system that helps the majority of those with lots of money, those who look the other way because they just want to be left alone, and those who know how to manipulate the system. Everyone else is just sheep who party until their dying days and make no impact on society.
But I digress - thanks for the anwers.
I think the ethanol / corn answer is the real reason the egg prices went up, thanks for whomever posted that. I looked it up afterwards and it makes sense.
I've never seen egg prices fluctuate depending on the winter / summer months, mostly because I buy from the same places consistently. The biggest price jump I've ever noticed happened this past week from 1.59 - which was steady for a few months - to 1.89. I've never seen it raise more than .10 cents every few months. So I knew something else was going on here.
