Does anyone have any info on gene doping? I have been watching a show about it on the discovery channel.

Gene doping is where scientist take a viruis and remove the disease part of it, replacing it with any gene they want to transfer. the altered virus enters cells and deposites a working gene.

They claim that gene doping will make it possible to add a desired gene that make our bodies produce extra epo (Erythropoietin), which provides endurance.

Belgium cattle have a genetic mutation that prevent their bodies from making Myostatin (the hormone that tells muscles to stop growing). They also claim that there is a human version of the mutation is in existance, and it will soon be possible for an athelets muscles to grow even larger.

Does anyone have anymore info to give, this is very interesting and will most-likely shape the bodybuilders of tomarrow.

All of this info i have you can find on the discovery channel "doping to win".

sounds risky to me.
I dont know all that many scientist myself and it doesnt sound like something
youd Just pick up or order on the black market.

Looks Like you just briefly explained what it is.... what else was you wanting to know?

looks real interesting to me, I think I will read more on it.

Many claim steroids are risky too.

I would imagine that just briefly explaining it would be an understatment!

I have seen a lot of post from highly intellegent people here(alot more intellegent than me I can barely spell!!!), so I was thinking that someone else has more info about it or atleast seen the same program. I also thought that it would spark an intrest with people on this board that like to keep on the cutting edge of body building.

Are you asking because of the recent article in the Catastropyhics issue of Scientific American?

No I didnt know anything about it. Does it have any good info? I just find this very intersting.

Lots of good information. I'll let you know what issue it is (november, I think). Just a heads up, it's not exactly put in layman's terms (if you catch my meaning).

I'll stick with aas:D ;)

I would think a lot more research needs to be done before I would consider that.

You can't turn gene therapy off. So Expect a much shorter life span just from the stress of all the extra mass.

Sounds great but not available. Personally if I could get a doc to graff gorilla muscle onto my skelatal frame I would but its all just theory. In the meantime you can get test

Yeah, I read a great article on this back in 2004 as well. In one of those scientific journals which is put out monthly. Scientific Monthly or something like that

Talked all about removing the bad part of the virus and making it reproduce the mystatin gene, etc. Once it was injected into rats the gene virus replicated over and over on its own. In a matter of weeks (or 1-2 short months) the rats were 50% larger and had 50-75% more muscle mass than their non-injected controll rats. Even the muscles that were NOT trained grew at phenomenal rates

And sadly enough, yes, their life span was shorter as well.

But it was still a very good read. .I will dig it up and post the info for you guys. Its pretty amazing what science can do now-days.

I have not seen the show, but it may have been showcasing DR. H. Lee Sweeney's use of adeno-associated viruses as vectors for IGF-I. He is working on a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and since the gene that causes it cannot fit in a AAV, he tried IGF-I and it worked, on mice. He is probably the most mentioned scientist on these gene doping shows.

I know that the FDA had put all human gene therapy trails on hold after the death of a patient at the University of Pennsylvania, and another French trial gave 2 of 10 kids T-cell leukemia. I know that there are new human trials currently occurring, but apparently funding is the issue now.

The science behind the use of AAVs as vectors is fairly basic, and I would not be surprised is there are some scientists currently working with top athletes today.

In my opinion, messing with steroids is relatively safe, messing with peptides is probably a little more risky, but messing with your genes at this time is just plain stupid.

Does sound very interesting, wish i would have saw that one as I watch Discovery all the time. Soundz like it will put peeps like me out of biz one day. LOLzz I bet somehwere, for some reason it is already in use...
