George Carlin - An Insight

Somebody sent me this email. I thought it had some good insight so I forwarded it here to ProM.

------

FROM GEORGE CARLIN (His wife recently died...)

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but

shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend

more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses

and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more

degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more

experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too

little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too

tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too

much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years

to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back,

but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We

conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things,

but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the

atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan

more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We

build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies

than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small

character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days

of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but! broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality,

one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from

cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the

showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can

bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share

this insight, or to just hit delete...

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not

going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe,

because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is

the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a

cent.

Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but

most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes

from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person

will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak And give time to share the

precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the

moments that take our breath away.

George Carlin

That's good stuff.

Carlin rules love his standups, This made me think of only one person (My Uncle) my uncle had a dream to become a sea captain and sail the seas and live on an island with his family , he has accomplished both and is a very happy man with alot of love , i recently just saw pictures and he lives everyday in paradise on the island of St. Croix where he owns a very nice sailboat and is a sea captain on a giant yacht, I think he has the right idea his house is very humble and earthly his backyard is the ocean he grows his owns fruits and vegetables and lives life without a materialistic point of view sure they have a town and grocery store bar and resturants but hes seemed to focus on the better things in life rather then getting that new Lambo or mercedes or fancy house and toys, with this kind of lifestyle one can only have more time to spend on the things that truley matter in life , God, Wife, Family and Health.

I agree 100% V. I wish I lived in a not so fast paced place like an island inthe Carribean. Every time Jackie and I go to one we wish we didn't have to come back to this rat race. Because in the end, that's what it is, a rat race. Even I have gotten caught up in the toy factor of life. Worried about my cars, my house, my chopper, when in essence, I dont need half of it to be happy. Well, ok the chopper maybe a must  , but I could definitely do without the Hummer and Mercedes. I always admired the Jimmy Buffet way of life, which is basically what you described from what I gather. I'd do it in a second, but change is scarey.

Another thing, and I am not downing my own country, but US seems to be the main offender to the enjoy life rule. We go to a French Island and these people know how to relax and enjoy. Not a worry in the world, they just live their lives. Businesses will actually close at random just so people that work there can go and do something different during the day for a couple of hours. You'd never catch a business in the US closing int the middle of the day to take a siesta ya know?

So true. My wife is from Mexico and when we travel south to see family you see people that are really happy with way less in a material way. They are MUCH more family oriented than we are. We come back to the states and I realize how much we really have and how we put too much emphasis on excess and the things we own. We have much more stuff than we truly need (including food) because you see a lot more obese people here too :(

good read.

Yeah, it can be so easy to lose perspective.
Thanks for the reminder.

A good read, but not written by George.

Good catch. Any true Carlin fan would have recognized that it was not his work by the part that mentions prayer.

George is NOT a big fan of the church.

YEAH.. WHEN I FIRST READ THAT I THOUGHT "THIS CANT BE CARLIN.. HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN GOD OR THAT WE HAVE SOULS".. he is a devout athiest.. and praying is out of the question for carlin lol..:D

Im a huge George Carlin fan as well, from everything i've seen of him and i believe i've seen it all, i dont have any recollection of him being a devout atheist, just someone who has a lot of problems with how certain religious instituions do not allow people to think for themselves, and some of the flat out hypocrisy

Such a surprisingly profound statement.... I don't think anyone could have worded it better.

I dont think the George Carlin writing it is the moral of the story. The message this writing gives, from whomever wrote it should be the focal point.

magoo.. you may be able to find it onthe web.. but, he was on leno or lettermen.. cant remember which and said that he does not believe that their is a god and when we die.. we are gone for good..

And this is not to say that he wrote the poem above, because that was proven that he didn't, but since he went through a life catastrophy like losing his wife, leave the option open that people change.

I myself do not believe in religion. I think it carries alot of good morals, but I just do not at this point. This is not to say that if I ever reach rock bottom and reach out for something I dont believe in as an only hope for support, that I won't change my ways.

People change. (And this is not to say he did)

One of the more embarrassing items making the internet/e-mail rounds is a sappy load of shit called "The Paradox of Our Time." The main problem I have with it is that as true as some of the expressed sentiments may be, who really gives a shit? Certainly not me.

I figured out years ago that the human species is totally fucked and has been for a long time. I also know that the sick, media-consumer culture in America continues to make this so-called problem worse. But the trick, folks, is not to give a fuck. Like me. I really don't care. I stopped worrying about all this temporal bullshit a long time ago. It's meaningless. (See the preface of "Braindroppings.")

Another problem I have with "Paradox" is that the ideas are all expressed in a sort of pseudo-spiritual, New-Age-y, "Gee-whiz-can't-we-do-better-than-this" tone of voice. It's not only bad prose and poetry, it's weak philosophy. I hope I never sound like that.

Now that's funny.
