Getting a New Hip....

I just returned from the ortho today for my consultation. Not great news. Getting a new hip. This does not mean I'll have three, it means they are doing a total replacement on one. The other will follow in one year.

I have bone on bone impingement in both hips due to a faulty angle of the femur head into the hip socket. Also my femurs are a bit deformed on one side.

The surgeon is booked up until first week in October. The board can now look forward to my "ground breaking journey" into hip replacement whining in addition to my "heart failure whining".

I will blame it on steriods upfront just to spark discussion even though he said it was genetic.:) Anyone with experiences in this matter?

Yes and No...

First off, sorry to hear your need for bilateral surgery's P, let alone "just one"! Those darn AAS! ;)

The only experience I have in the area of replacements is when I did my clinical rotations on the Ortho floor and during my internship at a Physiatrist's clinic (Physical Medicine and Rehab). With that said, even though I wouldn't want the surgery myself of course, there is "good news."

Today's hip replacement surgery's are SO MUCH BETTER than years past- many are up walking that or the next day aided with crutches of course. You can expect alot of bruising. One guy in his 50's who had bilateral replacements said he was so HAPPY he had it done... improved his life alot.

If done right- once you are fully rehabbed (which to some degree yours should be faster if you are already in fairly decent shape and strong) you really shouldn't have hardly if almost any impairment with your life.

Best of luck friend.

new hip

Had it done 13 years ago. Was in a lot of pain until then. Mine was from breaking my hip and not knowing it. Procedure went fine, recovery would have been easy if I wasn't stupid. Dislocated it 3 weeks after surgery and needed second trip to OR to fix. Really not much pain in recovery. Took about 5 months before I was totally heeled and good range of motion. I was only 35 years old when done, and am coming up on needing it replaced again. I know someone who recently had it done and it appears incision area much smaller and recovery quicker with new method. Sucks going through airports, always get treated like a terrorist. Good Luck

Well PW, that's some news for sure. It may not be that bad. There was an anesthesiologist at the gym where I used to train at a few years back (before it closed). He had his hip replaced and loved the result. He was an avid cyclist too. My ortho wants to replace my shoulder but I am holding out until the end. I do want to hear about this journey when you embark though.

how old are you? in the past year ive had arthroscopic surgery on both of my hips to correct impingement. im only 25 and the hope is to avoid a total replacement in the future.

WOW!!!

Sorry bro. that you have to go through all of that. Guess my surgery isn't so bad now. Talk about a lesson in gratitude for me. I'll keep you in my thoughts bro. and I hope everything goes well with the surgery. Pax.

Sorry to hear about your condition and your whining will be allowed. I am still debating to have my knee replacement surgery done. Trying this drug AFLUTOP to see if it will help my cartilage.

Thanks for the kind thoughts all.

Thick1: I have a friend with both knees replaced that has resumed playing squash that is murder on knees. He is doing terrific in zero pain.

WTW11171: Thank you for your kind thoughts. I peronally believe that positive meditations have a stronger effect than we currently realize.

Scrapper: I will be 49 next week. As far as the arthoscopic procedure, it is much more recommeding in your twenties and thirties because a hip replacement is almost guaranteed to need to be replaced again in someone that age, so the "arthroscopic shaving" or reshaping is more often indicated because of your age. I think yoga and stretching should become a part of your routine to help stave off the total replacement from what I heard this morning.

TheBrick: I've put it off pretty long. It is starting to put me in pain at night effecting sleep and altering my life. My Gf will be getting on a plane next Friday for a month in Italy...without me.. for the first time in seven years. I can't take the flight and all the walking. I don't know anyone with the shoulder done, but I think the key is just waiting until it effects your daily life. I think I've gotten so accustomed to shoulder pain over the years (have it bad now) that I would miss it if it were gone!

Mark1: Are you currently in pain? How do you know it needs replaced? Has it dislocated or just gotten "loose."

Myosin: Thanks for the encouragement. Doctor said one day on the hospital, walk same day with walker, cane within five days. As far as girlfriend activies, oral only for sixty days, female dominate positions until 120 days, canine positioning after six months. Actually I made that last part up, I forgot to ask!

I have been tracking three people at my gym the last year with replacements, two by my surgeon, and its taken the full year to really get "normal". Hopefully it will not be a big deal, and I certainly want to get them done before and if my heart condition deteriorates increasing the risk.

PW, leave it to you to find some humor in this. Damn that was funny. Keep us posted.

On my left knee I have a little pain but I can still do some heavy leg presses, I am trying that drug AFLUTOP which is supposed to help the cartilage and it is a 21 day regimen and I am on day 19.

Thanks for the kind thoughts all.

I think you are absolutely doing the right thing if its to that point in your daily life. I would too. I think shoulder replacements are the least successful from what I can gather, so I am waiting as long as possible for improvements in surgical technique (hopefully). You are right, its amazing what pain you can get used to and I told my doctor that very thing. Keep us posted.

PW you are correct in saying this. Meditation is a very powerful tool. I have had much success with meditation. I am still presently on the journey of awakening the kundalini or holy fire. Pax.

You got me..

hahahaha- you had me at first... good one, good one

i have alot of back issues due to hip dysplasia and sacral rotation, this in turn im told will fast track me to needing a new hip or two
good luck to you my friend

new hip

Mark1: Are you currently in pain? How do you know it needs replaced? Has it dislocated or just gotten "loose."

Not to much pain, but I find it loose and clicking, if that makes sense. Some days the pain is up a little. By the way, the did the replacement using epideral vice sleep which was good.

FrknHuge:
I didn't help myself either. I've been active in other sports from triathalons (twenty five years ago), tennis, squash, etc at competitive levels for many years at basically what was a "Clydesdale" body weight for each of these sports. It was not uncommon for me to enter a tournament and have a match where I weighed 120 lbs more than my opponent. I do believe this level of activity at a high body weight accelerated my need.

J4ever:

I will take advantage of pm'ing you, but for general terms can you let me know what restrictions you have on your physical activities, particularly related to weight training?

Sorry to hear that man, I'm up for a complete shoulder replacement within the next 10 years my surgeon told me, I'm only 34 y/o so I can relate kinda. Not sure how he can put a time line on when I'd need it but eventually, and for me that will be when I cannot workout or even move my arm at all. Good times...

I am sorry to hear about this. I know youve already been through a lot with your heart. I think your previous experience has hardened you some and so you should be able to deal with this setback. Just another little bump in the road huh. Please do keep us updated on your post op exerience in October.

Did the docs mention how this is going to affect your life afterward? Will you be able to do any weights with your lower limbs?

I run a therapy department and help rehab total hips and total knees quite a bit.

Most people feel much better with their new hips than prior to surgery when there is bone on bone, etc. The first few days after surgery are the worst, the rest, is hard work and you will be up and going strong in no time!

Hir Replacement

Aloha,

Had my hip redone in 97. Looking at getting a 'revision' done on the same hip within the next month.

Are you a candidate for a 'resurfacing procedure'?

FYI, a condition can occur called 'Osteolysis', which results in the loss of bone around the polyethelyne cup that is inserted into the acetabulum (hip joint socket). Research the different type of materials available: metal to metal, ceramic to ceramic, ceramic to polyethelyne, and metal to polyethelene. Each material has pro's and con's. You want to ask your doctor for his input too.

Train for your surgery like a warrior, body, spirit and mind. Proper nutrition, supplements, herbs and acupuncture are all very important for pre and post op procedures.

E malama pono,
