Got any suggestions for plates, bars and dumbells??

Hey guys Im building a homegym with Bomb Proof Olympic Style Gym Equipment: benches and cages etc. However I'm trying to find a place to get my bars, plates, and dumbells from that is'nt to expensive. Does anyone have any good places to go for these? Maybe a wholesale shop or online store? Since its just the dumbells, weights, and bars im looking for i dont mind if they are used or new as long as the quality and price is right. I need dumbells from 5-100lbs and about 600lbs-1200lbs of plates depending on the price.

well, you dont want to order online because you have to pay shipping and thats incredibly expensive. Youll have to find a place nearby where you can go get them all yourself and load it in the car/truck. I personally went to Dick's Sporting goods. They have weights there cheap. The dumbells were hex and were less than 50 cents/pound I think, somewhere around that cost. The olympic plates are real cheap if you by a set with the bar.

Look at the link and pay attention to the plates. They appear to be flat steel with steel flat bar welded around them with a hole cut in the center. A welder near you might be able to make them up for a fraction of teh price you pay at retail.

Depending on where you live??, i'd try craigslist.com go to the sporting section, people are always getting rid of their equipment.

I think the biggest factor when it comes to buying weights and bars is the shipping cost. It doesnt pay to order these items through the mail, cost is way too high. Youre better off getting them within driving distance.

Look for any gyms going out of business in your region as well. You can find some super cheap equipment at gyms closing their doors.

Check locally for used sporting goods stores, such as Playitagain. Also call around to local cities for used places as well. You can save a bundle if you can buy used locally. It will even pay to drive quite a ways for a deal. Shipping is killer on heavy stuff...

Yeah online places will kill you on shipping. Because of my crazy hours and hatred for the oxygen thieves at the local gym, I have converted my basement into a personal gym over the last 7 years. Believe it or not, Wal-Mart sells weights and barbells for decent prices.

They sell Golds Gym brand weights and they're actually a lot more accurate when you put them on a scale than the York, Standard and Weider brand weights that I have paid more money for in the past.

As far as bigger items like benches, treadmills, etc, don't buy from Wal-Mart. You will be disappointed in the quality and the life span of these. Sears is actually good about their treadmills, ellipticals and certain other items.

Hmmm...

I'm really surprised no one on here has given you any sh_t for only wanting to go up to 100 lbs. on dumbells.


Anyway, the guy that mentioned buying the Gold's equipment at Wal-Mart wasn't that far off. It's pretty good stuff for the price (the Olympic equipment, that is).

I've also gotten pretty good prices on Olympic gear at Dick's Sporting Goods and Sports Authority (both are chain stores, not sure if they are near you though).

There are LOTS of places to get used commercial grade equipment CHEAP. If you are anywhere from NY to MD I absolutely have a ton of stuff - all top of the line but USED. I have friends in any of these East Coast states that also have lots and lots of what you are looking for. You'd be surprised at what you can get for relatively little expense when you buy used (the stuff definitely does not hold its dollar value).

He use to own them.....now I do.

They're a great solid set of dumbells.....the only problem is they can be a real pain in the ass changing them. Otherwise i give them a thumb's up!

MAINEVENT BOUGHT MY SET.. the dumbells from ironmaster have changed now though.. they have a quick release system now and are much, much easier to change.. the old ones were a pain sometimes but, the db was of very high quality.. the new ones are a different animal.. a buddy bought some and i saw them the other day.. nice changes..

I've got a set of the Ironmaster DB's - the old kind - and can vouch for 'em.

LATS, those new ones look nice - Looks like they don't need to be threaded nearly as much to tighten down?...

Hey I have an Ironmaster Smith machine set up and a set of the 120 lb adj dumbells. All their stuff is AWESOME! Love the Smith Machine in particular for all the basic heavy compound lifts for at-home-training-without-a-spotter safety. The dumbell are so heavy duty you could drop with onto a padded floor surface without damage, but I love mine so I put them down gently and under control
Check 'em out online.
I got the IM2000 smith machine, a superbench, leg ext/curl attachment, preacher curl attachment, dbell storage stand, spotter racks for the dbell, and the 120 lb set of adj dbells. Everything works great! Looks good in the gym too. Everything is first rate form, fit, and finish. Very smooth action.
Very well engineered. Like everything in life the quality is a bit expensive, but you only have to buy it once. Look at the costs of a gym membership over 3-5 years... and the aggravation of those sideways cap and wife beater wearin' wannabes hoggin all the 10's ....and you'll see it's worth every penny if you have the space to set it up.
