A guy that works at our gym decided tonight that he was going to lubricate all of the bars with oil. He rubbed oil on the outside of the ends of the olympic bars where the weights fit on. He said the plates fit too tight and it was too hard to slide them on and off. Now all the damn bars are so slick that the plates want to slide right off. What kind of moron does this!!!??Have no choice now but to use collars or you risk a nasty accident. All I know is I am going to forget some night that he did this and will have the squat bar loaded up with 400 + lbs and those plates are gonna fall off.
Another guy at the gym thought it was the normal thing to do because it protects the metal from rusting and said that his old gym used to do it. Am I just an idiot, or is this the most moronic thing you have ever heard of!!??

Does seem like a stupid thing to do but yes they do that a lot. A few weeks and it'll be just as hard to put those wheels on as before.

I'll tell you what I hate is when they oil the entire steel cable on machines. At least three times I've been doing tricep push-downs and I walk away with a straight black line down the center of my face from the fing cable!

A true dumbfuck!!!

We had some clown do this to the olympic bars at a gym I trained in some years back. The plates would go sliding all over the bar and even off, and yuo couldn't get the olympic collars tightened down either, so it was just the most dangerous, fucked-up thing ever!

The guy shuold be fired, or better yet, made to lift, say, a 300+ lb incline or overhead press with no collars and greased-up bars!

Amazing that there are actually two Darwin Award winners like this on the planet!

Never have had this experience with oil down bars, and ive been at many gyms. Guess I was just lucky before. Now I have had the experience of getting the line down my face or shirt when doing pushdowns. I guess Ill be using collars for the next 2 weeks.

LOL, I agree! You would think that common sense would prevail, it doesnt take a genius to figure out that its dangerous. When he told me what he had done he was all proud of it, like he had done the gym a great service.

I would like to hear someone like Old Fella comment on this, since hes a gym owner. Maybe Phil will chime in, id love to hear his response LOL!

what a tool

They did that once when I used to workout at Gold's Gym. I guess the clicheic phrase of, "like throwing a hotdog down a hallway," can be applied to more than just sex.

Yeah I hear ya on the cable thing. And you don't figure it out until you get into the locker room...Embarressing for sure.

oil or not....

for your own safety and those standing near you.....why wouldn't you use collars??!!!

I'd use collars even if I have 2 5lb plates on there. It's just habit.

I've been lifting for 25 years and never used collars the whole time and I never dumped any weights either

LOL, funny shit. I have to say though, this is one of the oddest things I've ever heard of as far as gym equipment maintenance goes.

Same here. I train alone and dont trust a gym monkey to spot me (or tell em its all mine as they enthusiastically do some bent rows)....I've not yet dumped a bar, but without collars there is the re-assurance that instead of choking, a slight tilt on the bar and I will be free....

And if there was anyone close enough to get hurt...I am sure I would have asked them for some assistance prior to dumping one side....and if they ignored it...fk em ;)

I hate when they grease up the bars. Yeah, I've had a lot of gyms do it and say it was for the same reasons listed above, but I thinks it's a bunch of crap. I too have had that line run down my face and it sucks. I agree though with the whole not using collars thing. If you're doing a controlled lift collars just are not needed. And if you really do get in trouble you can dump it. Spotters aren't always around and if you want to push yourself, it's better to be safe than sorry. Not saying dumping is right but I agree with cannibal at least it gives you that option if it comes to it.

I find it more annoying fighting to get weights on/off the bars than putting collars on. It is also more annoying trying to get the rust stains out of my gym clothes. It is proper maintanence. On the other hand the person doing the oiling shouldn't be using oil. He should be cleaning the bar off with WD40 or some type of rust inhibitor. JMO.

I would love to see a collection of Darwin Awards just pertaining to people who decide to be idiots in the gym. My personal favorite is the guy with chicken legs who loads up the squat rack with way more weight than he can handle, bends his shaking knees ever so slightly, and relies on his friend to get the weight back into to the rack.

As long as they dont start lubricating their own bars around me I'm not worried yet

This reminds me of something kinda funny that happened to me some time back. At the time, I worked out at a hardcore gym... no heat, no air conditioning, unless it got extreme one way or the other. That meant, most of the time, the windows were open. Well, if the humidity and weather was right the bars and plates would "sweat" a bit. One evening I was squating 405 with (me stupid) no collars... well that night the bar was sweating and one 45 lb plate slide off the end. Well after that, the bar tilted the other way and the other plate slide off... and so one and so on until I was standing there with nothing but a bar on my shoulders. All I could do was just stand there, keep my balance and ride it out. :D It was a noisy set to say the least and the water fountain ended up with a nice dent in it too from where one of the 45's rolled and smacked it on the side
