How many total sets per workout?

Just trying to get an idea of how many sets total for 1 workout I should not try to exceed to prevent overtraining?I watched some video a few years back that seemed to advise not many over 20 sets total but my memory is vague now.Anyone care to help?
 
There is no special set number. It's different for every type of training and every different person. You just have to figure out what works best to meet your goals.
 
stick with the 1-100 range, adjust as needed
 
What most people are saying. It really depends on which style of training you are doing. What your goals are in your training. If your working with lighter weights or heavier. Etc...etc.. Just remember to change it up occasionally. If you want post your current routine and some stats and we can look at it and give our opinion about whether we think your overtraining or not. But even that is all hear say, as we don't know what supps your on if any, how much rest you are getting, how fast you as an individual recover, or how hard your going at it when your training, Too many variables, to just pick a number. There are general guide lines that we can throw at you. But give us a little more info on your style of training and goals. Read the article that freddyz posted and start with some basic guide lines and adjust them depending on your progress.
 
a general rule if thmb i go by is warm up set reg set heavy set rep till exhaustion..not ouch that burns let me stop.more like AHH FUCK MY ARMS GONA FALL OFF!:eek: than drop set and rep till u puke..lol an thats plenty for me but my goal is size n some strength...i do single body parts at a time bi-tri same day..but 1loves got a poiny everyone is diff ur goals maybe diff u maybe natural u may be juicin lots of variables

All growth is about time under tension plus intensity. So the # of sets is just a factor there, its not a critical number. Frankly if I were to do 20 sets i'd be stuck in the gym for 2 hours, as between switching exercises and rest time between sets it takes me a while to get through since every set is full intensity

You won't overtrain by doing too many sets per workout, you will by training too many days with too few days off, and working the same area without enough rest time.
 
i love running about 5 sets per excersise per muscle group

especially after a tren-a injection...i just want to be dead by the time i leave the gym

then tan while i chug a shake
