I posted a long time ago asking if anyone had done laser hair removal and what kind of results they got. I went ahead and did it a while back. The last session was about a year and a half ago. It took over a year to complete all the sessions...11 total, with a few touch-up sessions in between the main sessions. I have very dark and very thick hair, which is supposed to be ideal for absorbing the laser light and getting the best results. The laser used was the Light Sheer, which is supposed to be one of the best ones to use...at least at the time. I don't know what else is out there now.
First of all, it was PAINFUL. Really, really, really, really PAINFUL. I was practically jumping off the table when they'd zap me. It felt like being stabbed repeatedly with an icepick. They said it's because my dark, thick hairs were absorbing so much of the light. I would feel each zap all the way down to my bones. And yeah, I know hair doesn't go all the way deep to touch bones, but that's just what it felt like. I have a high pain tolerance so I "got used to it"...but mainly after using prescription vicoden and prescription numbing cream before each session. No joke. It was that bad.
Anyway, as far as the results, the hairs responded great each time. Most of them "popped out" of the pores when zapped and the others you could see fried still in the pores...the fried ones fell out within a week after a session. I did each session about 6-7 weeks apart.
Finally, after all the sessions were done, I was hairless from waist up for about 4-5 months. Then, little by little, hairs kept growing back. But they grew back kind of weird...patchy all over and some patches with more hair than others. Not a pretty sight.
Now though, after about a year and a half, a lot of hair has grown back, but it's much thinner and sparse. The coverage is much more even now and finally looks normal and not patchy.
Before, if I didn't shave, I looked like a gorilla wearing a sweater. Now, I look like a normal guy with light hair coverage. When I shave, it's so much easier since there's less hair and it's less dense. My back and shoulders only have a light coverage of hair, but on my back is really only around my trap and rear delt area. The rest of my back is hardly hairy at all and the hairs that are there are very light.
Overall, I'm happy with my results since I don't have that gorilla look anymore. To others, if you're not as hairy as I was, you'll probably be mostly hairless and just have to do touch-ups every year or two only if you want to.
I do think that being on test will make hair regrowth more possible and faster, so keep that in mind if you generally do heavier cycles and/or are on year round non-stop.
As far as the cost, mine was $3k for all the sessions. But, they did burn me badly one time all over when a "new girl" didn't know how to set the machine right and had the thing too high. I sued them and settled for $2k of my money back. So not bad for a grand total. Make sure it's a place with experienced people working who know what the hell they're doing. They had a girl working once who looked like she was 18. I refused her and asked for the senior tech.
I hope this info helps anyone who is thinking about getting it done. Of course, remember that this was just my own experience and thoughts about it, and other people's experiences may vary.
