Laser Hair Removal.....I did it.....

I posted a long time ago asking if anyone had done laser hair removal and what kind of results they got. I went ahead and did it a while back. The last session was about a year and a half ago. It took over a year to complete all the sessions...11 total, with a few touch-up sessions in between the main sessions. I have very dark and very thick hair, which is supposed to be ideal for absorbing the laser light and getting the best results. The laser used was the Light Sheer, which is supposed to be one of the best ones to use...at least at the time. I don't know what else is out there now.

First of all, it was PAINFUL. Really, really, really, really PAINFUL. I was practically jumping off the table when they'd zap me. It felt like being stabbed repeatedly with an icepick. They said it's because my dark, thick hairs were absorbing so much of the light. I would feel each zap all the way down to my bones. And yeah, I know hair doesn't go all the way deep to touch bones, but that's just what it felt like. I have a high pain tolerance so I "got used to it"...but mainly after using prescription vicoden and prescription numbing cream before each session. No joke. It was that bad.

Anyway, as far as the results, the hairs responded great each time. Most of them "popped out" of the pores when zapped and the others you could see fried still in the pores...the fried ones fell out within a week after a session. I did each session about 6-7 weeks apart.

Finally, after all the sessions were done, I was hairless from waist up for about 4-5 months. Then, little by little, hairs kept growing back. But they grew back kind of weird...patchy all over and some patches with more hair than others. Not a pretty sight.

Now though, after about a year and a half, a lot of hair has grown back, but it's much thinner and sparse. The coverage is much more even now and finally looks normal and not patchy.

Before, if I didn't shave, I looked like a gorilla wearing a sweater. Now, I look like a normal guy with light hair coverage. When I shave, it's so much easier since there's less hair and it's less dense. My back and shoulders only have a light coverage of hair, but on my back is really only around my trap and rear delt area. The rest of my back is hardly hairy at all and the hairs that are there are very light.

Overall, I'm happy with my results since I don't have that gorilla look anymore. To others, if you're not as hairy as I was, you'll probably be mostly hairless and just have to do touch-ups every year or two only if you want to.

I do think that being on test will make hair regrowth more possible and faster, so keep that in mind if you generally do heavier cycles and/or are on year round non-stop.

As far as the cost, mine was $3k for all the sessions. But, they did burn me badly one time all over when a "new girl" didn't know how to set the machine right and had the thing too high. I sued them and settled for $2k of my money back. So not bad for a grand total. Make sure it's a place with experienced people working who know what the hell they're doing. They had a girl working once who looked like she was 18. I refused her and asked for the senior tech.

I hope this info helps anyone who is thinking about getting it done. Of course, remember that this was just my own experience and thoughts about it, and other people's experiences may vary.

I was thinking about it but changed my mind when I heard that it wasn't permanent if you were on test. For the pain, temporary results, and price, I didn't think it was worth it. How much do the touch ups run and how long is each session?

I was thinking of having it done, but after reading this I'm having scond thoughts. Vicodin and numbing cream... jeez.

I have tried Lightsheer, Gentlelase and GentleYag. Lightsheer burned my skin and it took weeks for the hyperpigmentation to go away. The best response hands down for me was GentleYag. I just wish I had tried that first after spending money on the other lasers. My skin is olive. Also, from personal experience, a knowledgeable laser tech makes the difference. Hair growth is hormonal so plan on seeing more regrowth with high androgen cycles. Something to note is the hair is not permanently removed with laser, it's reduced.

Yeah, hair is definitely only reduced. Theoretically, I guess if I was to do another year's worth of sessions, then it would be reduced even further, but then the patchiness would definitely be noticeable. And believe me, it's much better to be hairy than to have odd 1/2" to 2" patches of hair all over...before mine grew and evened out, it looked like I was waxed by a blind woman.

The touch-ups didn't cost me anything. They weren't part of the deal, but the laser tech kinda liked me so she was just being cool.

About the pain, like I said, everyone is different and the darker and thicker your hair, the more it will hurt. You have to stay out of the sun and wear heavy sunblock if you darken easily. If your skin gets darker/tan then the light will be absorbed through your skin too...and not only will it hurt more but the chance of burning your skin and getting hyperpigmentation goes up. I tan quickly and easily so it really sucked to have to cover up all the time and/or wear tons of sunblock any time I went out for even a short time.

If anyone out there does go ahead with laser hair removal, REALLY make sure they have experienced techs to do it. A lot of these places have high turn around too, so see if they have techs that have been there a long time...more than one too, so if one quits, there's another experienced tech to do the rest. Best bet is to choose a company with multiple locations that's been around a long time.

Also make sure they put in writing that you can get touch-ups in between sessions in case the tech misses any spots during a previous session. It makes a difference.

And if they keep swearing up and down that it's "permanent", don't argue with them...have them put it in writing that the hair will be permanently gone and you'll be completely hairless at the end of the sessions. Then when hairs pop up later (especially during a high androgen cycle) you can either try to get free touch ups later on, or ask for you money back! LOL...hey, if they're mislead you like that, take advantage of the lying bastards!

my place was very sure to use the word reduce when referring to my hair...that said, i have dark skin, which isn't as good, but very coarse hair.

the first two treatments hurt quite a bit...the first one because they were starting from scratch, by the second time they turned it up a lot so that one hurt too...after that, no big deal honestly...

i never had any of the burn marks or anything that they say you can get.

bye bye ingrown hairs! i think it reduced some of my scarring.

i also paid about 3k for chest and stomach....18 mo interest free financing...and im almost done paying it off )

i had my back hair lasered about 2 weeks ago. it felt like i was being popped by a rubberband. it certainly didnt feel good but it wasnt unbearable. the hair has already started growing back, and the lady tells me ill need 4 or 5 more treatments. problem is this costs $500 per session

...

You'll probably need more than just 4-5 more sessions to be honest. Your hair is "already growing back" but it's not the same hairs that were zapped. The hair you see growing back are hairs from a new growth cycle. Hairs grow in cycles and the laser only affects the hairs that are in a currently active growth cycle. Dormant hairs that are waiting for their "turn" in the next growth cycle will not be affected until they're in the active growth phase. That's why there's a need for many sessions to make sure all the cycles are hit. But, if you see hairs growing back within a few days of the last treatment, then it's probably hairs that the laser missed. That's why I'd go back for touch-ups in between sessions.

Let's just say there are a few places I'd like to have it done. ;)

Very good info. Thanks for posting!

i dont know, after the session my back was totally clean, it looked great. then about a week later i had some regrowth

just my opinion...

For me, any missed hairs would show up within a few days of the last treatment because since those were missed, they would continue to grow as usual. A week is hard to say since there's either the chance that those hairs went into shock from the treatment and kind of "paused" then grew...or it just happens to be a new growth cycle and those aren't the same hairs zapped. If it's more than a week or so, I'm more likely to believe that it's a new growth cycle.

 WOW 500 BUCKS A TREATMENT I NEVER KNEW HAIR REMOVAL WAS THAT EXPENSIVE. YOU COULD BUY A LOT OF RAZORS FOR $500 BUCKS

$

Yeah, it's not cheap. Just make sure not to go to one of those little nail salon kind of places that just happen to do laser hair removal on the side. It's not the same as waxing where almost anyone can do it right.

Is it possible to eliminate facial hair with this process? And is it to the point were it doesn't leave scars?

EXCESSIVE BODY HAIR IS HEREDITY TO AN EXTENT,WITH OUT ASS.BEING THAT SAID USE OVER THE COUNTER PRODUCTS THAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR MEN.IT IS A PAIN IN THE ASS BUT IT DOES WORK FOR SOME PEOPLE AND MY SELF INCLUDED IT CAN BE MIMIMIZED TO EVERY 2 WEEKS.WHEN WINTER COMES WE ALL WEAR A SHIRT ANYWAYS(AND THE EXCESS INSULATION DOESNT HURT ANYWAY)LOL

Yeah, facial hair can be removed with it. The tech told me once that she's had a few guys come in to zap their beards. I think it's risky though since hyperpigmentation could occur and on your body it's not as noticeable as it would be on your face. I had a few spots on my that hyperpigmentation occurred and it's not great, but with my shirt off, it's not really noticeable unless someone knows it's there. On your face, it's not easy to hide and it's on a smaller area, so it would be more noticeable. Also, I'm assuming the face would hurt a lot more, if that's an issue for you.
