I was hoping someone could explain in a little more detail what actually happens with the muscles, spine, tendons and all that stuff in the lower back when lifting.
More specific: The feeling I get in the very lower part of my back, from maybe an inch above my asscrack to the lower-small of my back and about 4 inches across, is pretty much unique. I've had it for as long as I can think of, since doing deadlifts in high school, and it is different than any soreness or burn I get in other body parts. It's mostly just extreme tightness mixed with a lot of burn and a little soreness. edit for clarification: It's not all the time...happens when I do lower back exercises and lasts maybe 30-45 minutes...longer than lactic burn but shorter than muscle soreness.
Today I was doing heavy DLs wearing a belt. Did a warmup set then sets of 6, 5, and 3. By the time the last set rolls around I get this crazy tightness in there. I can take off my belt (i wear it very tight and actually experiment with different placements, all the same result) , sit down, stretch out etc but the only thing that makes it go away (temporarily) is actually to hang in a pullup position so as to stretch out the spine.
Because of the delicate nature of the lower back and constantly hearing about spinal injuries and stuff, my main questions are as follows: How much damage am I doing, if any, to my lower back by doing these exercises? Also, should I only train to a certain point, or should I continue even after I have this intense burning stiffness? Is this a normal reaction to resistance exercise for this part of the body, or am I doing something wrong or straining something? Is there some kind of exercise I should do to give my lower back an advantage while doing DLs, so that it actually has surplus power in the lift, causing it to not work as hard? Am I at risk for damaging something important like my spine?
I generally continue on to do exercises such as bent over rows, db rows, pulldowns etc, but the former especially is really hard to do when my back is so tight.
Thanks for the help bros.
