Machine Learning Predicts Your Health Better Than Your Doctor

There is a LOT of chemical information which is gleaned from a blood test. It's a chemical puzzle, the picture of which physicians often fail to assimilate into a solid diagnosis. This is where machine-learning algorithms can excel. In a recent study (https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1708/1708.00253.pdf), researchers have shown the power of using a machine-learning algorithm to diagnose disease by the unique chemical fingerprint of a blood test panel.

In the future, this is going to save many of us a LOT of grief. We will have early indication of disease. There will be no need for second opinions. Get a blood test, take a photo of it with your smartphone and BAM, diagnosis with a lower percentage of error than that of the best doctors.

The reason I'm excited about this is that with overpriced medical care, this is going to give power back to the consumer. It's our health and our life and we should never have to pay for a doctor's incompetence.

I wouldn't even mind going to doctors if the whole process of insurance and billing wasn't a health concern on its own. Shit's gone too far. It's out of balance.

It's gone from health care to health care less.

Cost of care is completely out of control and insurance follows. I work with it intimately. Whole system is a wreck. Greed in "for profit" medicine run amuck. A universal system, like every other major nation, is the only real option.

Further, reducing human error in medical treatment with algorithms and AI will save lives. Medical error is a major cause of death in this country which people don't realize. It also will help reduce cost of care.

Say thank you to our insurance companies for this. They don't pay us well, which degrades a patient's care.

If right now you're saying, "I have the best insurance! They pay everything." Your insurance sucks.

There is little about health in the medical field. It is mostly pain and disease management in what is supposed to be the most cost effective way.

Just the opposite sometimes too happens. The employer that pays for our health insurance makes us go in once a year for blood work and a quick physical. They take biometric measurements like height and weight. They measure BP as well as a CBC and I don't know what all. They also test for rec drugs and nicotine. If they find drugs or nicotine then you have to pay a penalty, don't remember the amount. If we don't do the test at all we each have to pay a $800 fee for the year. If some things come back bad on the checkup then you have to follow up with a doc and report back to them. So they are trying to keep employees healthy probably with the idea that preventative medicine will keep costs down.

This checkup always annoys the hell out of me because I have like 5 doctors I see on a regular basis. For most folks though who are going in maybe once a year and have one doctor it is probably good for them.
