Made the switch to Strongman

I did my first strongman contest recently and tied for second in the heavyweight open division. It went to the individual events for the tie breaker and I ended up with third.

It was a blast and vastly different from powerlifting. I'm gonna stick with it and see what I can do.

Very cool - never tried this, did compete as apowerlifter many many moons ago. I DO like the idea of functional strength that seems to go with the strongman stuff!

The owner of the gym I go to is all set up for strongman comps and is having one in Sept. He is training people for it and he's also a world class powerlifter. I think you will have fun competing in that and the training is somewhat similar to what you have been doing. If your near north Fla. PM me and I'll get the info on the contest for you. He's trying now to get sactioned for this , he's already sactioned for PL meets. J.R.

There is the functional strength and the punishing cardio to go with it. I haven't sucked wind like that in over 20yrs.

Now I have to figure out how to structure my training for max results. The wild card in all of this is my job. It can be very physical but unpredictable at the same time.

I think I'm finally getting my diet dialed in because I'm leaner than I have been in years. I'm also eating a lot more too.

PB,

It's interesting that yuo mention being leaner AND eating more with this training. Mom and I have been worknig on figuring out the Westside routines. In this, there's a lot of what's called GPP - general physical preparedness.

This includes lots of sled dragging, pushing the car around the block(s), and whole body warm-up and cool downs with light weights (push-ups, pulldowns, light abs, leg curls, etc)

Doing this - and we're slowly working into it and gradually increasing the workload - means questions about aerobics (now here's an ugly word, LOL!) or calorie counting can be ignored. The trick is getting enough good food in in order NOT to lose weight and be able to get stronger!

Never realized how out of shape we were!

Dad,
I know what you mean about being out of shape. It's one thing to be strong in the gym and something totally different to apply it to the real world.

Yesterday's training involved stone loads and tire flips. When I got done with that I pulled a van backwards up the driveway. The whole session was about 3hrs long without much rest. One of my training partners commented that he had'nt seen me do that much work before. I don't think I've spent that much time training, in one session, in more years than I can count.
