Medical Community and LBA's

I work at a level 1 trauma center with the most respected burn unit in the state. The only protein supplement the patients are given is "Hydrolyzed Beef Collagen" or as we know them LBA's. The company that manufactures them is not a "supplement company", its a company that specializes in Medical Nutrition Therapy for metabolically compromised people and is regulated by the FDA.
Burn patients must have a positive nitrogen balance for the wounds to heal. The LBA's are also manufactured for people with pressure ulcers, who like the burn patients, must be in a positive nitrogen balance to properly heal.

The protein of choice is not whey isolate, whey concentrate, soy, milk, or egg...its LBA's.
Whey Isolate proteins are also used in the medical field but costs $16 per pound!!

Thanks Phil for introducing me to this superior form of protein.

Just thought this would be an interesting thread for people who are still on the fence about their protein of choice.

Now that is awesome! Thanks for that confirmation. I think this cements the fact that these LBAs Phil has been advocating are really a great product with many benefits to the user.

Its just this simple: if you haven't tried them, do yourself a favor and order some ASAP. The taste, cost, and benefits are INCREDIBLE!

I knew there was something behind them;) , actually they just work and if you do not believe it...use trial and error and see for yourself - that is the best research for them.

Good post!

Good post.....
The original intent for Met-RX was to help burn and wasting victims. Dr. Connelly realized that the quality of food consumed in the form of proteins is far more important than how much food was consumed. Patients cut back on calories, consumed more protein and gained a significant amount of lean mass. That also worked very well.

....could someone PM and let me know a good place to buy LBA's??

Thanks in advance.

i def want some of this. im 8 weeks from my first show and wanted to throw some this in my gallon of water everyday. i see there is carbs. now do you think those carbs will affect me?

$16 per pound is about half of what of what LBAs cost. Here you can check my math.

1 pound = 454 grams
Whey isolate is about 90% protein so 454 x .9 = 408.6 grams of protein
Each bottle of LBA has 32 servings consisting of 5 grams of protein
32 x 5 = 160
So 408.6 divided by 160 = 2.55 So that means it takes 2.55 bottles of LBAs to equal 1 pound of whey protein isolate.
Each bottle of LBAs cost $13 if bought in bulk so $13 x 2.55 = $33.15
So it would cost you $33.15 to get the equivalent amount of protein in LBAs as in 1 pound of whey isolate that cost $16.

Now before anyone starts yelling at me that LBAs are soo much better then whey isolate please be aware I am not stating one is better then the other. It just seemed to me that the original poster thought that $16 was expensive for a pound of whey isolate and I simply wanted to point out that technically LBAs cost more pound for pound then whey isolate.

Based on the original post it seems that some in the medical community must think LBAs hold some advantages over whey isolate or else they would be using whey isolate. I would find it really interesting to hear why they choose one over the other so if you ever have the chance to ask please do and post it up.

Question...........Do you think you can compare the weight of one protein source to the weight of another protein source?

Question...........Do you think you can compare the weight of one protein source to the weight of another protein source?

I would say both yes and no. If your question is simply that of mass then absolutely yes, 1 gram of protein from steak = 1 gram of protein from soy. Now if your question is based on amino acids that make up and/or biological value of each 1 gram of protein then the answer would be no.

I am not trying to say either LBAs or whey isolate is better then the other. I think it really comes down to the individual and what they are trying to acheive. Someone that is trying to lean down and wants to take in as few calories as possible may want to take in only the best protein source so that they get more of what they need and less of what they don't. Where as another person who needs the extra calories may do better by taking in extra protein simply for the calorie aspect.

Was that a politcal enough answer :)

For curiosity's sake, what's the name of the product and what pharma company makes them?

That was a great answer.....I agree

The product is called Pro Sat 64 by Medical Nutrition USA. They also have a product with 10.2 grams of fructose called Pro Stat 101.

The amount of protein for a burn patient is 2 grams per kilo of bodyweight minimum with 3 grams per kilo being even better. The total protein is a combination of LBA's and food. If a patient refuses the Pro Stat they are given Whey Isolate milkshakes. The optimum combination though is the LBA's and food.

Its worth noting that the dietician in charge of the unit said that people who use the Pro Stat 64 or Pro Stat 101 heal at a faster rate than those using the Whey Isolate milkshakes.

The LBA I prefer and encourage from my clients is from hydrolyzed beef collagen......some companies do not use that, they use beef extract and it is cheaper..........can you ask what the difference is in healing rate and absorption?

Thanks for posting the brand names bro. I am going to check with some family memebers ( Who are all in the Medical Field in some way) that work for some of the hospitals in the city and see if they are being used as well.
