Ronnie Coleman vs the no.3

Ronnie Coleman almost closed a number 3 captains of crush gripper on his first try. That is pretty good, considering he probably doesn't train his grip. I don't know what kind of numbers he is putting up in the gym,but to almost close a 3 on your first try, that is impressive. I heard that Dorian Yates couldn't even close a number 2 on his first try.
A number 2 is around 195lbs of crush, a 3 is 280lbs of crush. When your hands are strong enough to close a 3, you can probably crush a closed can of beer or whatever kind of liquid in your hand.
The next level up is really serious the no. 4. Magnus Samuelsson is one of few men, who can close it and he can crush a raw potato in his hand.

That's interesting. Can you close a #3? I don't think I can. I have closed a 2 though.

I am an avid reader of ironmind news, and I've talked to Randall Strossen a few times.

so where did you get the information from? I'd like to see it myself... And if Randy told you that, I'd like to verify it. Next time I see Ronnie I'm gonna ask him to try it for me.

Go to the ironmind website. It should be there. I think it was posted last week some time. It might be in the "more news" section. It says that he clamped it to 1/4 -3/8 of an inch of closing it.

I apologize ahead of time for my ignorance in powerlifting but what is used to gauge this grip strength. Thanks for any information.

The grippers are set to certain poundages. They are like the little grippers that you get from sporting goods stores that you can close 200 times, but they are much tougher. The #2 gripper is set at 195 lbs, the #3 is 280, and the #4 is 365. The average man only has a crush grip of 110lbs.
There are only a few guys in the world that can close a #4, including Magnus Samuelsson WSM winner. Another one of the guys that can close a #4, and the first one to do it is Joe Kinney. I have never met him in person, but from the photos he looks like a very normal sized guy, he doesn't even look like he lifts weights, and i would bet that he is not even 6' tall and weighs 200lbs. But this guy can crush a raw potato in his hand. He trains on the grippers with the same effort that someone would put into a set of squats, and in his case probably even harder. So, you could probably put Joe Kinney against the strongest powerlifter in the world, and he would have a stronger crush grip than the powerlifter that can handle over 900 in his deadlift.
I don't know if i answered your question or not, but if you want to find out more go to ironmind.com.

Does crushing a super size portion of McD's fries count?? :D

do they make a number one for starters???

if they do, where can you get them? cost?

I was just gonna ask the samething.....I'd like to increase my grip also.

Yeah they make six different grippers. They have a 60lb, 80lb, 100lb trainer, and a #1 at 140lbs.
I would recommend starting with the trainer or the #1. If you have worked your grip before start with a #1. It is very rare that a person can close a #2 on their first try. If you are pushing around fairly heavy weights in the gym already, like 300lb bench presses and 400lb+ deadlifts you might be able to start with a #2. You can find the grippers at IRONMIND.com at $20 a gripper.
The grippers are really heavy duty.
They are in my opinion the best company by far when it comes to strength training tools for wrist strength, supporting grip strength, and crush grip. They have a lot of awesome tools on the site. Check it out.
Also, it depends on how far you want to take your hand strength, but you might want to look into some other tools like the WRIST REINFORCER and the ROLLING THUNDER DEADLIFT handle. The rolling thunder is a one handed lift done on a fat revolving handle. NO one in the world has ever done 300lbs on it. The world record is around 270. Magnus Samuelsson did 262, and i think that he is considered to have the strongest overall hand strength in the world.

A post by Ron Mazza on the GripBoard (hope he doesn't mind me reposting it):

Clay,
I can just about assure you that Coleman has done considerable grip work. Last year, the day after I competed at the nationals in Arlington, Texas, my friend Eric needed to squeeze in a workout and we ended up dropping by Metroflex Gym (where Coleman trains). We ended up meeting and training with his training partner Rendy Delacruz, nice guy(really strong kid about 5"10",320lbs, 23 years old.) After bullshitting for awhile it turns out this kid is a grip guy. He showed me this 2' foot section of steel train track which was extremely hard to pick up(awkward). He said that he was the only one at the gym that could lift it, not even Coleman could. Then he coerced us into doing some plate pinching, hub lifting and finally Rolling Thunder. At first I thought this kid was full of shit cause he said that he was training for the Rolling Thunder Nationals and was intending on pulling 330. Well he wasn't full of shit it was just that his R.T handle was older and stuck just a tiny bit when it revolved. I ended up pulling a pretty hard 275 on it. He missed the 275 but in all fairness he said he had pulled with it the day before. He did tell us though that the best Coleman's done on that R.T. was 225, so if I guessed I would say that Coleman's probably doing 200-210ish on a good R.T. handle---- so although Coleman may not be doing direct work on the grippers, R.T., etc. all the time, he's definitely messed around with that stuff. That was definitely a very cool chance meeting--- too bad we missed Ronnie.

just bought myself the #1 baby!!! lol gotta start somewhere. How tough will the #1 be? I mean will a regular joe off the start beable to close it?

Im not sure what kind of weight you are pushing around right now, but it might be easy for you. When you can close the no. 1 around 12 times then you can start to seriously look to closing the no.2. Just remember squeeze real real hard.

Is there a rep and set scheme to these grippers, or a grip program?

You are supposed to put the same kind of work and intensity that you would into a set of bench presses. Well not exactly, but you should probably do three sets of as many reps as you can.
Go to IRONMIND.com it will explain everything you need to know. They sell books on how to close the grippers.
