shoulder arthritis

I would get an opinion form a sports doc who specialises in this type of thing. The average doc thinks that lifting weights is a stupid thing to do and generally just tell you to stop training altogther. What do they know?

I,m waiting for a date for my op to get 1 cm taken off my AC joint in right shoulder, I had xray and MRI and a couple of cortisone jabs under xray conditions already.

I cant press anything overhead or do incline bench, the pain is real bad.

My doc reckons 6 weeks out of action and then it should be back to training heavy.

Good luck bro :)

Good luck on that D, I feel your pain. You will come through just fine. As you are doing, early intervention is best. Takes a little patience though.

Do any AAS (deca,eq,primo or others) help?
Thanks,
Sd

Anything that put some fluid in the joint to "pad" that area will help, but the effect will only last while "on"

Cheers M. I'm looking forward to the break to be honest, give my whole body time to recover :)

T Y all for the info my dr. will refer me to an ortho just have to take the steps that the ins. requires 1st. like him and pys. therapy.

I have OA and RA and it is gross and you have to live with it, I NEVER do overhead pressing just lots of laterals, front/side, rear delts and traps. Don't worry about your delts they will grow because most people hit too much of their delts anyway when they bench.

I do not do flat bench and only do dumbells and put the bench on the 1st notch up so it is like a 10 degree incline, also a flat bench but not. Find some good machines that don't bother you either. We have a lot of Strive and Hammer that don't bother me the decline Hammer especially is great with no pain. Focus more on volume vs heavy weight and stretch all the time, I stretch all damn day long.

TY bro i will try there is a huge asortment in there i wil try um all

My mistake. Missed that.

I totally agree with this. Once you have arthritis, you will need to think in terms of control and not a "cure". I would reevaluate what you might be doing in the gym to aggravate your shoulder and identify the worst movements. NSAIDS help, but its temporary. Fish oil is a natural antiflam too. I fight the same and my doc says a shoulder replacement is the only option left, but I am not doing it. I am putting that off as long as possible.
I also agree with maintaining flexibility. I wish I had put more effort in on this years ago. I do think that helps.

The thing that scares me about shoulder replacements is that they are very painful post op, and it seems the shoulder is painful with ROM limitations chronically after the surgery. I would put off any joint surgery until there was just no other option. Shoulders never seem to have as good results as the knees or hips... Just my opinion from what I have seen working in the rehab field!

Thanks for that info Emery. I have heard the same. The amazing thing is my doctor said that my shoulder ROM would not be greatly improved after a replacement. So I was thinking to myself, what is the point of doing it then??? That, plus the fact he said my days of heavy lifting in the gym would be over post replacement. When I heard that I thought, no way! At least, not yet. I am used to pain. The shoulder is a very complex machine so I could see how the success rate would be tricky and unpredictable at best.

Hey brick, was your shoulder replacement suppose to be a total or a partial?
I have greater range of motion in mine after the surgery.

We didn't even get that far into the discussion. When he laid out the general outline, I let him know I wasn't interested. He said he predicted I will evenutally want to do it. I thought no I'm not :) I may eat my words one day, just not anytime soon.

Did you have a total or partial replacement?

The technology for joint replacement has, and continues to improve by leaps and bounds.

I had a partial replacement known as a hemiarthoplasty. Normally, the surgeon would add a biologic alograft ( an achilles tendon from a cadaver to act as a cushion).Fortunately, I still had cartilage in the glenoid
socket. I sought out a surgeon who only specialized in shoulders. I didn't want an ortho that was a jack of all trades. The attachment enclosed was 3 months post op posterior view . I'm able to hold my arm out on my own strength.
6 months out, I had total active ROM.

Sounds like you have had good results! It seems I remember you saying in another thread some time back you are able to do dumbell flyes and laterals in the gym? Is that correct? Are you pain-free now? Any issues?

Yes

I stay away from overhead pressing movements and stick to laterals, cable
flys , and use hammer strength equipment with success. I can't do
normal inclines because it resembles an overhead movement.
I am pain free. My only issue is that I can't go heavy like
I once did. I can do 275 for reps on bench but I don't
to over do it.
