Im curious how relative strength is to size. I know we have some big boys on this board, and im wonderin what kind of weight you throw around. Also il post mine first. No, im not gonna ask for 1 rep maxes lol. Pretty much just, what do you do for 8-10 reps on. . . this is kind of a survey im hoping to get a lot of responses

Stats : 21yo, 5'8, 10-12%bf, 215lbs

Incline Barbell/dumbells - 275-285x8 BB, 120x8 DB
Shoulder Press (all the way down, no half rep bs) 100x10 db
Barbell row - 315x6-8
Deadlift - 405 x 8
Pullups - i SUCK 8-10 MAYBE
Squats DEEP(front and back) - Front 315x10, back 365x10

I don't do shit on the excersise you listed. Now when I do a jerk and clean, I'm very proficient and from start to finish it takes no more than 2 minutes. I'm also completely awesome when it comes to the snatch. I hope this info helps your survey.

He didn't ask about your sex life silly :D

When I was doing drop sets (no rest) I would start with 5 reps of the following:
Bench - 350, 5 reps
Squat - 475, 5 reps
Bent over rows - 350, 5 reps

The literature...

The thinking on the strength vs size issue has generally held that strength is more (though not exclusively) a neural adaptation. This would involve adaptation of Golgi tendon organs, enhanced recruitment of sychronised motor units, etc.

Hypertrophy, or size, has seemed to be related somewhat more to time under load (with an upper limit, of course).

I think I read somewhere that the r value correlating size and strength was something like .6 - not a tremendously strong correlation, but somewhat correlated nonetheless.

I'd be interested in any research someone might come up with, as I've not looked at this for several years.
