The Thinking Bodybuilder's Toolbox for health.(bp,cholesterol, heart, kidney, liver)

Typically for a heavy hard training bodybuilder our bloods are out in relation to various things in comparison to a couch potato.I had my yearly wellmans check a few year ago a day after a heavy leg day by chance and my bloods showed i had chronic kidney failure...yeh really. I forget name of enzyme that showed up at massive amounts. Doctor admitted it also shows up due to heavy training etc...ie muscle damage...But still they sent me for kidney tests....ALL GOOD!!!!

However, the kidney specialist advised me to STOP taking Vitamin C and Vitamin D3.....as stressed kidneys....same with drinking 4litres of water daily.
I asked about steroids...obviously didnt advocate their use....but had no actual knowledge of them...but admitted she didnt see it a concern to kidneys like she did the vitamins..

Taking 10,000iu of Vitamin D got me to 38-39 for my 25 hydroxy vitamin D test. Id prefer levels a bit higher than that. I don't buy kidney issues due to vitamin D unless you already have a kidney problem.

Lmao then she has no ideas
Vitamin D3 you need a hefty everyday like 15000iu over several month to get any issue even then it won't be dangerous just get your level tested if you can it's worth it! And blood pressure/water retention are the first and worst side effect of steroids for kidney so she really has no idea

Kind of told her that...i was on 5000iu D3 and 3g Vit C....Re the steroids..in fairness i believe she was referring directly damaging them as opposed to a side effect of " abuse " having an adverse effect on kidneys...

How old is she and from where does she get her information from? Show her this site www.vitamindcouncil.Org

Nope kidneys perfect...had one of those all day tests getting bloods done every 4hours ( GFR test i think () to check filtration along with ultra sound scan on organs...all good.
It was a while ago so i forget the name of the enzyme....enzyme ended up being as a result of heavy training....in a lay person or as you say someone with kidney issues in first place...then it might indicate something..

38-39 is still on the low end. Optimal is 90-100. If my memory is good you only run in issue with level of 140+

Too bad here in Canada I can't get it tested. We don't pay for health service but doc won't make you pass test they don't find useful or cant justify. He told the only reason he would test it, Is for a 50+ years old woman with risk of osteoporosis. suck :(

One of the disagreements we had on her preaching mewas that she was barely 5ft 5inches and what one would call abese...She ate a bit humble pie following my scans and GFR test.
I actually now live in the Canary Islands so may produce enough Vit D myself now

No mention of TUDCA? IMO it is imperitive with orals and for a week or so upon cessation. NAC is great but does nothing for cholestasis.

Optimal is 40-60, 60-80, 90-100 depending on who you ask bro.

It's not IN here? Maybe at the time I hadn't finished researching it...but I will say right now that unequivocally it is the best Liver protector out there and you should run it alongside orals.

Tauroursodeoxycholic Acid - Scientific Review on Usage, Dosage, Side Effects | Examine.com

ummary (All Essential Benefits/Effects/Facts & Information)

Tauroursodeoxycholic acid, more commonly referred to as TUDCA, is a bile salt that is found natrually occurring in the body. When regular bile salts reach the intestines, they can be metabolized by bacteria into UDCA and then later bound to a Taurine molecule to become TUDCA.

TUDCA is a water-soluble bile salt, which is in contrast to regular bile salts possessing both water soluble and fat soluble ends and conferring a detergent effect. This is good for the bile salt's biological purpose (emulsifying fats in the intestines to help with absorption) but when bile acids back up in the liver, a clinical state called cholestasis which occurs when the liver is unhealthy, these bile salts can be damaging to cells by destroying the membranes and signalling for cell death. TUDCA and other water soluble bile salts like UDCA compete with this toxicity and thus indirectly protect cells from death.

Additionally, it seems that TUDCA is able to reduce stress to any cell's Endoplasmic Reticulum; an organelle in cells that serves as a highway from the nucleus out into the cytoplasm, and aids in folding proteins. Through reducing ER stress, TUDCA has been implicated in a wide range of beneficial metabolic effects such as reducing insulin resistance and diabetes, and being a neurological protection agent. However, usages of TUDCA beyond the liver are preliminary whereas usage of TUDCA for helping an already harmed liver is quite reliable as TUDCA is used in clinical settings (hospitals) for treating cholestasis.

Lol did you point out that she was fat to her face? I want to run a GFR test

I keep cramping badly and am worried it is kidney or high iron related.

Knight what ever ended up happening with your vitamin D being lower than expected despite supplementing high amounts?

Still going to re test with Jarrow at the same dose. I've gotten a bit lazy with it and need to start taking it again.
