I'm going to start hitting the calves, and was wondering if there are some killer iso exercises for this strap-like muscle over the shin area. All I'm doing at present for them is raising a light dumbell on top of the foot while sitting in a chair. There's plenty of advise on seated/ standing calf raises, but seemingly little on developing this particular muscle!

Yes, reverse calf raise. Some gyms had or will have a machine to do these. Basically you put the weight over the top of the front of your foot and lift up! This will smoke the tib anterior and hurt like hell. But it is the only way of really directly working this little sucker. Can be done with a cable and strap, a dumbell with your foot elevated. Just have to be creative if there is no specific machine like I mentioned.

Some time ago, there was actually a contraption called the "tibulator" available from some online retailers. I think the manufacturer went out of business, and I never did buy one. It's just one of those annoying areas you like to see rounded out when looking in the mirror. When I'm doing reverse forearm curls I often wonder if there's a less awkward method for them too. Sadly, sometimes there just isn't one!

lol

ouch! OF, but this is good.....I don't do these, but I had no calves and had to work them twice a week last year to get them..I did standing calves raises and seated raises...now I have some, lol.....my sister has and has always had huge ones....wtf????

:banghead:HAHAHAHAHA WTF is right?? It is genetics at work or at play as in playing an evil joke on those dogged with poor calves. All you can do is work them along with your other body parts. If all else fails there is SEO!!! OUCH!! back at ya! LOL.

No way am I pinning myself repeatedly in the shins!
I will take the long, hard road thank you! :D

Ive found believe it or not more intesity into stand calve raise i find best using a smith machine on a block going heavy n strict maybe drop set (having some1 take plates off)100reps or so really fires up my shin muscle... on both legs that is:D works well also fast power walking really smashes em :)

I am not sure if it the only reason, but heavy backpacking through hilly terrain and mine are huge....or maybe it is genetics, because my calves or pretty big too. Quads though, they suck and have become my new focus.

Spot on i used to hike up hills around lake district in the uk with my bro few yrs back its possibly no1 for continiual shin muscle breakdown, must be why mine aint that bad, good point
