first off Ive stunted alot of growth in my bones doing 11 years of gymnastics..why? because my entire family is 5'6 and over and im the oldest of 4 kids and im 5'2 lol. Since Ive stunted alot of growth does that affect the growth of my overall structure as in bones/joints and putting on muscle?? Does it affect muscle maturity as well? i have trouble sometimes doing certain excercises because even tho im taking glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate, they still ache. they cant seem to tolerate my muscluar endurance and strength whether im doing a heavy set or a ton of reps??

i dont really kno, but im also interested in the answer as my lil cousins are involved in gymnastics and id hate to see them do detrimental things to themselves this early in life
frk

i wouldnt think it would do anything to the strength of the bone, but maybe the ends of your bones where they connect to other bones (forgot the name)... that's where the growth plates are.... if there would be a problem i would think that's where it would be... bones are very active tissue, they remodel themselves over and over again.... your pain could be someting like a growing pain... i have no idea

Not a dumb question at all. We know that exercise and traing all stimulate hormones in the body. They can stimulate test levels and other things that go with it. Since the growth plates of bones or the epiphyseal disks are stunted from an outside amount of test to the body, it could possible be that over production of some hormones in the body could do this also. To be honest I'm not sure. Just a theory, one of the reasons that adolecent juicing is frowned upon. I know the only substance that you can take that doesn't affect this is Anavar. As far as the ache goes in the muscles, I would say to me that it sounds more like a deffiecency in a vitamin of some sort. But by looking at you, you can tell that you eat real healthy so that shouldn't be the case. What vitamins and supplements do you use along with your meals.

I know several little girls in gymnastics that are in pain all the time. One of my closest friends is a gymnastics coach and I work with a girl now that made it to level 10 and competed all over the country and she says that she was always in pain when she was younger. I'll talk to her tonight and see how she's feeling these days. She's 19 so she can still feel some of the effects of all that traing.

Rea this is actually a good question..

I started weight lifiting at the early age of ten and am struggling with that very thing now..High reps hurt my joints..

thanks armageddon!! for viatmins and supplements...the essentials like protien bcaa's multivitamins, glocosamine etc. etc. I just think that the stronger I get my joints are gonna go thru hell!! Its only my joints that get aggravated, its so annoying, because sometimes it limits me to my full capacity when doing a set

Its not test that closes the epithelial growth plates off in the bones, its estrogen. Although studies show weight lifting in men will increase test levels-I dont think that pertains to prepubescent girls doing gymastics! Id bet its simply the fact that you gave your young bones a beating when you were young with the intense gymnastics, and the trauma is somewhat permanent.

yes exactly !!

How Long??

Rea, how long have you been taking the glucosamine and chondroitin together and at what dosage? i agree with the previous post on the fact that trauma from the past has done on the joints. It's mosly the impact that the cartilage has to absorb as well as the wear and tear. 11 years will take its toll as you well know.

glucosamine

my joints kill me as well... especially... elbows OUCH
i've been taking glucosamine and chondroitin 1000/800 for like 5 months or more.... not sure if it works or not.. maybe i need to up the amount ....i take just the suggested amount on the bottle.. but not sure if it really does anything or not... hence my elbows still kill me... knees some of the time as well

32yrs old... guess... i'm just getting old LOL !! !!

Some things to think about........

Get yourself some Carlson's Cod Liver Oil. You can order it pretty cheap on the net. Take 1 tsp/day for the vitamin's A & D and the high levels of EPA and DHA. Look at your mineral supplements too. The best source of calcium come from bones in the form of calcium hydroxyapatate. I found my multi-minerals at a local heath food store. Low levels of vit A/D can cause bone and muscle pain. The vitamins in the oil are the right form and easily used by the body. Be careful to keep your cod liver oil intake down if you tan frequently as exposure to sun causes your body to produce it's own vit D.

OK, I'm not a gymnast by any means-LOL, but I knew a gymnast that was from another country. She told me that if you showed promise as a gymnast at a young age in her country...you were given "growth stunting drugs" to keep them short to remain competitive. Not sure how true this is/was, but she seemed honest when talking about thre "programs" that her country implemented with thier athletes. As far as lifting, I know the "experts" say it stunts your growth. I began lifting weights 3 X per week at 9 years old. I'm taller than everyone in my family from the past two generations by at least three inches...so I guess that blows that theory out the window for me at least. Yes my joints hurt like everyone elses, but when you lift heavy weights consistantly for 25+ years...they are going to get tendonitis in them sooner or later. :)

ya very true about gymnastics stunting growth, but wow! i didnt know they had the girls use special drugs to enhance the stunting of thier growth plates!! the way i stunted my growth was due to all the traing i did from age 7 till about 12 I trained gymnastics 6 days a weeks for 4 hours working on floor, beam, bars, vault. geez... i have tendonitis in both knees..it sux but oh well

Talked to so and so tonight at work and she said she struggles with this also from time to time. So this tells me a few things that my first hypothesis is probably wrong and need to change it. Mike S was most likely right. As I myself feel like shit from time to time from the tendonitis and bursitis. I can tell you when its going to rain and when it's cold it hurt my joints. I'm guessing that its from wear and tear on the body. There are things that you can try, like beverly's joint care. I love that shit! Sodium hyolauranate(sp), and chondritan, msm, glucosamine, and GH. Pentosan works well from what I hear. DMSO workswell from a topical and as an injectable. There's a book called DMSO-Natures Cure.
