$28,770 is the mean. There must be some high poverty rates in many states. The mean in my state is around $55,000, last I checked.

I am number 39 on that list and start at 59,000 yearly. So I am only at the mean for my state. I work with many families who are below this. They really need to increase minium wage up to at least $10 hour for a person can just meet minimum basic needs.

Where I live... population estimated 34,000. The mean is estimated at $34,500. The average person work in a mills at around $12 - $14 hr... starting pay is $8.00 hr. Restaurants and retail store have to compete with the mills, so they pay more than the min wage. The average cost of a home here is $111,000.
