Unable to connect to the internet

A few days ago my desktop pc just stopped being able to connect to the internet thru my cable modem. I thought maybe my wireless card got fried so I disconnected the network and connected it directly to the cable modem and still nothing. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows and tried again, it recognizes the new ethernet card it tells me there's no internet connection available even when I have the cable modem connected directly to the pc. I know it's not the cable modem because I can plug it into my laptop and it works fine. Any ideas where to go from here?

With a cable modem you must disconnect power from it and reconnect every time you connect a different computer to it if there is no router in between. It locks into the network card's MAC address. Also make sure your network card has drivers and is functional on the fresh reload of Windows.
Pull the power cord, wait a couple seconds then reconnect. Then plug in the PC.

Hmmm... I think my motherboard's fried because I noticed that none of my PCI slots seem to be working. My ethernet won't recognize a valid connection, my sound card is dead even after the hard drive wipe and reinstalling the drivers... Time for a new machine I guess
