I urge you to review the list of medicines with PPA and avoid these
medications. All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are dangerous. You may want to try calling the 800 number listed on most drug boxes and inquire
about a REFUND. Please read this CAREFULLY. Also, please pass this on to
everyone you know. STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has
been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women
ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication. Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicine.

The following medications contain Phenylpropanolamine:

Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite Suppressant

Acutrim Plus Dietary Supplements

Acutrim Maximum Strength Appetite Control

Alka-Seltzer Plus Children's Cold Medicine Effervescent

Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold medicine (cherry or or ange)

Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine Original

Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Cough Medicine Effervescent

Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Flu Medicine

Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Sinus Effervescent

Alka Seltzer Plus Night-Time Cold Medicine

BC Allergy Sinus Cold Powder

BC Sinus Cold Powder

Comtrex Flu Therapy & Fever Relief

Day & Night Contac 12-Hour Cold Capsules

Contac 12 Hour Caplets

Coricidin D Cold, Flu & Sinus

Dexatrim Caffeine Free

Dexatrim Extended Duration
Dexatr im Gelcaps

Dexatrim Vitamin C/Caffeine Free

Dimetapp Cold & Allergy Chewable Tablets

Dimetapp Cold & Cough Liqui-Gels

Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir

Dimetapp Elixir

Dimetapp 4 Hour Liquid Gels

Dimetapp 4 Hour Tablets

Dimetapp 12 Hour Extentabs Tablets

Naldecon DX Pediatric Drops

Permathene Mega-16

Robitussin CF

Tavist-D 12 Hour Relief of Sinus & Nasal

Congestion

Triaminic DM Cough Rel! ief

Triaminic Expectorant Chest & Head

Triaminic Syrup ! ! Cold & amp;am p; Allergy

Triaminic Triaminicol Cold & Cough

I just found out and called the 800# on the container for Triaminic and they informed me that they are voluntarily recalling the following medicines
because of a certain ingredient that is causing strokes and seizures in children:

Orange 3D Cold & Allergy Cherry (Pink)

3D Cold & Cough Berry

3D Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant

They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708 with the lot number on the box so they can send you postage for you to send it back to them, and they will also issue you a refund. If you know of anyone else with small
children,

PLEASE PASS THIS ON.

To confirm these findings please take time to check the following:

WEll damn this would have been sweet to know at the beginning of the cold season.

Thanks for the heads up.

Good God ! My daughter and I just got over the flu. None of thoughs
meds were used but this is good to know. FDA doing a fine job researching
these things after the fact

Thanks bro , I have about 3-5 of those in my cabnet right tnow !!!

The government issued this warning in December of 2005, and I'm reasonably sure that none of those products currently contain PPA. The important thing to watch for would be any of them purchased prior to 2006. PPA is also used to treat urinary incontinence in female animals and and I believe a vet is the only legal source of it currently. If you have any of those listed products (or any other cold medicines and such) just check the label to make sure there is no phenylpropanolamine. Unless it is old, it shouldn't contain any. I can't remember for sure if it was legislated against, but I remember most manufactures removed it from their products due to the bad publicity. Be safe!

Good looking out Phil...

Good heads up Phil... Thats crazy shit,, my family has used Dimetpp products for flu recently and we have triaminic and robitussin products in the med .cabinet now ....

Thanks Phil. Forwarded to the rest of the family.

Good info.

We sure as hell don't want loved ones having a stroke.

Thanks.

Thanks Phil, I will put this up on my gym notice board with a big red sign around it. We have a lot of those medicines here in OZ and I'm sure I've used some of them in the past:eek: . Now how do I change my vote from Philly cheesesteak to just plain old PHIL? Thanks a million man.

Wow thats crazy, My sis has the flu now back east...Thanks

Talk about a major lawsuit. Sometimes I don't understand how scientists can be so stupid. You should know if an ingrediant is gonna FuK someone up before you invent it.

Yes, this is old and those have been reformulated.

At one time or another I've used 1/2 these. I will look into it.

Thanks ,
Boo

I know this thread is meant with the best of intentions and safety of users, but I wouldn't believe all the hype from that old research.

I know that, like any such association study, it raises more questions than it answered. First of all, the increased risk was still pretty small, and the fact that it was only seen in women could easily have been that women are the main consumers of OTC diet pills. The study also did not take into accunt dosage, and even the scientists that did the research admitted that women using diet pills are far more likely to take an excessive dose than people taking cold tablets for symptomatic treatment. And the increased risk was seen in women using PPA for the first time which means that if you've been using any PPA supplement for months with no side effects then the risk would be very small for you to continue using it.

I think pulling it off the shelves is an over reaction and that all they needed to do was put appropriate warnings on the containers. I mean, geesh if you take too much Tylenol it'll kill you but they haven't pulled that from the shelves!

The following was written by GS a few years back, which I also has to factor into the equation:

So why then did the FDA work so hard to keep PPA from manufacturers?

Well, there are the official reasons, and then there are the suspicions of those companies that sold PPA. Officially, a Yale study found a very small increase in the risk of stroke among women taking PPA and an even smaller risk among men. How small an increased risk? Miniscule. In fact, six billion PPA doses are sold every year in the United States. That's the official reason, but I suspect the real reason is really two fold. PPA is highly effective for muscle-sparing fat loss and is also effective as a cough and cold medication. But PPA is inexpensive compared to other newer diet and cold pharmaceuticals that require a doctor's prescription. I suspect that the big drug companies pushed for the ban because they do not make any money from an effective over-the-counter weight loss products and cough and cold medication.

My other suspicion is that the FDA was encouraged by the DEA to get Phenylpropanolamine off the market, because when synthesized, it can be used to make crystal methamphetamine -- also know as speed. Rest assured, PPA does give you an energy boost, but it is not speed.
