Weight belt debate

Just on my bench day. I don't do squats anymore, just leg presses, so no other need for a belt.
 
I don't wear one much since I started competing in strongman. In a contest I wear it on the overhead events otherwise it limits my mobility.

occasionally I use one for squats if my back is already achy.
Never for deads or bench.
 
Never wore a belt( 10+ years of training) Started wearing a belt last year due to the fact my squat was in the 400's for reps.... I thought it would be a good idea. Well core got weak and injured my lower back! I will never wear a belt again.
 
i tried using them once when i was doing squats and like the above, over a 6 week period my lower back got weak as hell.

havent used them since but if i get up to some heavy weights on squats i might consider it again.
 
I have had 2 orthopedic surgeons and 1 Chiropractor tell me that a weight belt is BAD for the back and will cause weakening of it and NOT to wear one........

I follow the example of a Pro power lifter and wear it after my warm ups, while doing my sets. I also do exercizes for my core on a regular basis i.e reverse hypers, goodmorning , weighted sit ups and weighted leg raises. J.R.
 
Only wear mine during rack deads.

If I decide to wear a belt during squats or floor deads....I will complete much less reps. I think I know why.
 
on deadlift , rowing and overhead press.
 
I heirneated a disc in my lower back a few years ago and simply can't lift without the extra support. The times I have tried to do away with it, i reinjure my back and have to stop lifting for 4-7 days. My lower back is a bitch and really limits me to certain exercises.
 
I wear mine when i get heavier on squats and deads. Having it on actually makes me focus on my form more.

My chiro told me the same thing but I think he meant wearing a back brace like for work all the time. I don't think it would weaken it if you only wore it once or twice a week for certain exercises. I remember Chad Nicholls told Ronnie to wear it all the time to help suck his gut in. I wouldn't do that though, only for benches then the belt and the elbow sleeves come off for the rest of the workout.

I do the same but I also wear it on my heaviest sets of flat barbell benching.
